In the paper on their findings, the study authors noted that this may be because the women in the study were less inclined to touch their partners while arguing, leading to negative effects. However, communication has still improved. One possible explanation for this, he says, is that “the intimacy of simply holding hands makes it harder to discuss matters rigorously.”
