“A wise man keeps his words, and a man of understanding is of a calm heart” (Proverbs 17:27).
It is dangerous that our mind becomes so agitated that we cannot think carefully about our actions. Our adversary the devil is an expert in spreading confusion. He loves to prey on minds that are torn and troubled with many cares, and he often has his greatest success in tempting us when we are so beset by worries that we act impulsively, failing to consider the consequences of our actions.
Solomon said, “A wise man is of a peaceful heart.” But how can we keep a calm spirit when we have so many stressful things to consider? There can certainly be no doubt that this is one of life’s toughest challenges, and there are no easy answers. However, like most hard things, developing a cool mind is a matter of course. Training.
Our brains may have a more complex connection to our souls than other parts of the body, but the brain (i.e., the physical mind) is still a part of the body, and as such, it should be trained to serve the soul, not hinder it. The mind, which is naturally uncontrolled and seemingly willful, must be put in its place, disciplined, and taught to help us reach heaven.
Training our mind to be calm is like every other type of training, it has to be done in small steps. It is a matter of gradual growth over time. What we do is put ourselves into a deliberate sequence of training, and we “exercise” every day. We find some little things we can do today to calm our mind and that victory encourages us to do the same tomorrow.
At least, we need it consciously price A peaceful soul. We need to pursue it, and when we find ourselves without it, we need to be wise enough to see the danger we are in and make godly efforts to regain our peace as quickly as possible. If we can’t always remain calm, we can certainly move in that direction. Today, as every day, you can take some steps that will make the mind more peaceful – and more mindful. What is that step?
“A quiet mind is a great asset in this life. Without it your godly life will not bear much fruit. If your heart is troubled, you are vulnerable to the enemy of the spirit. When you are agitated, you are not able to make good decisions. You will fall into a trap” (Lawrence Scupoli).
