Polls are closed in much of New Brunswick as votes are counted in the province’s local government elections.
Election officials said most polling stations closed at 8 p.m., although six locations remained open later due to technical problems.
Early results showed a tight mayoral race in Fredericton, with both candidates Atwin and Hicks briefly in the lead during the initial count. As of 8:10 p.m., Hicks was ahead by about 1,000 votes.
Results for races across the province are being published through the Elections New Brunswick website as ballots continue to be counted.
This year’s municipal elections featured over 1,200 candidates running for positions including mayor, council seats, rural district boards and district education councils.
The elections are expected to shape local decision-making on issues ranging from housing and infrastructure to education and community services.
Live updates will continue throughout the evening as additional votes are processed and verified, officials said.
The close contest in Fredericton is emerging as one of the most watched races of the night as the starting numbers continue to change.
