Sales have declined since the Trump administration eliminated the $7,500 tax credit, and carmakers are canceling models. And while it&#8217;s likely that the recent surge in gas prices will push more people toward EVs, it likely won&#8217;t happen quickly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">But if there&#8217;s a bright spot in the EV market, it&#8217;s the budget, high-end car \u2013 a corner of the market that is growing in number of models and, in some cases, even in sales.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">EVs priced under $40,000 can now match the most expensive models from a decade ago.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Range anxiety has long been a sticking point, especially for potential EV owners <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerreports.org\/cars\/hybrids-evs\/how-much-do-cold-temperatures-affect-an-evs-driving-range-a5751769461\/\" title=\"\">in winter<\/a>. most of people <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/afdc.energy.gov\/data\/10318\" title=\"\">no need<\/a> To drive far every day, but they want to know they can take a longer trip occasionally.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">For a long time, price and range were highly correlated: more expensive models went much further on a single charge. Now that is not the case. Some expensive cars have an estimated range of over 400 miles \u2013 especially some <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.caranddriver.com\/lucid\/air\" title=\"\">clear meaning<\/a> And <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.caranddriver.com\/rivian\/r1s\" title=\"\">Rivian<\/a> model \u2013 but offer less range than other $50,000 cheaper cars.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Range and price aren&#8217;t the top criteria for everyone \u2014 there&#8217;s charging speed, horsepower, reliability, aesthetics, size, and more to consider. But if your primary concern is just how far the car can take you on a single charge without breaking the bank, consider this unusual but useful metric: miles driven per dollar spent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">At a starting price of $32,000, the 2026 Nissan Leaf gets about 10 miles of total range for every $1,000 of sticker price, with Chevrolet&#8217;s $37,000 Equinox EV close behind. The most expensive EVs score very poorly on this metric \u2013 three miles per $1,000 or less \u2013 but they are luxury cars.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">(Note that price and range vary even for a model depending on trim; we looked at the cheapest price and longest range for each car and picked the one with the highest ratio of miles to dollars.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Just five years ago, the best cars in this metric couldn&#8217;t get more than six miles per $1,000. (After adjusting for inflation.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">A big part of that trajectory is battery technology: Prices for lithium-ion batteries, the primary type used for EVs, are set to fall to about $100 per kilowatt-hour in 2025, from $1,000 in the early 2010s. <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/about.bnef.com\/insights\/clean-transport\/new-record-lows-for-battery-prices\/\" title=\"\">BloombergNEF<\/a>. <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/rmi.org\/the-rise-of-batteries-in-six-charts-and-not-too-many-numbers\/\" title=\"\">Battery density has also increased<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-8\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">As battery costs dropped and manufacturers made more EVs, ranges increased and prices fell. Tesla&#8217;s cheapest Model 3 reached 321 miles of range this year, up from 220 miles at the time <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.caranddriver.com\/tesla\/model-3-2018\" title=\"\">launched<\/a> in the late 2010s, while its inflation-adjusted price declined.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Or consider the leaf, which <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.caranddriver.com\/reviews\/a15124059\/2011-nissan-leaf-sl-long-term-road-test-review\/\" title=\"\">Debut happened 15 years ago<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-9\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">As of 2016, the cheapest Leaf had a range of 84 miles and cost about $30,000, equivalent to $40,000 today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Nissan&#8217;s $32,000 <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.caranddriver.com\/nissan\/leaf\" title=\"\">2026 leaf<\/a> Has a range of over 300 miles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Some automakers have released entirely new models for under $40,000 in recent years, including the Chevrolet Equinox and the Subaru Uncharted. And the expiration of the tax credit prompted others to lower prices on existing cars: Tesla introduced a smaller, significantly cheaper Model 3, and Hyundai cut the price of its Ioniq 5 by nearly the same amount as the credit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Overall, the cheaper end of the market has grown rapidly, and <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cars.com\/articles\/new-evs-have-gotten-cheaper-since-the-federal-electric-vehicle-tax-credit-ended-523577\/\" title=\"\">The average price of a new EV has fallen<\/a>. (Used EV prices fell, and so did sales <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canarymedia.com\/articles\/electric-vehicles\/used-evs-are-bargain-buyers-noticing\" title=\"\">climbed up<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-10\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">There&#8217;s still a lot of bad EV news among automakers <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.caranddriver.com\/news\/a68851639\/kia-soul-dead-2025\/\" title=\"\">canceled models<\/a> and pulled back <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/autos\/detroit-automakers-take-50-billion-hit-as-ev-bubble-bursts-06a97414\" title=\"\">battery manufacturing<\/a>. new ev sales <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.coxautoinc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Q1-EV-Sales-Report-pdf.pdf\" title=\"\">fell 27 percent<\/a> From early 2025 to early 2026. But models that offered higher-end, lower-priced trims seemed to withstand the recession better \u2013 some of them even experienced sales increases, while others remained relatively stable despite the expiration of the tax credit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-11\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">New EVs still can&#8217;t beat new gas cars in terms of price and range. A standard Toyota Corolla can go more than 400 miles on a single tank of gas, and costs about $25,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Still, the cost of running a gas car adds up: If gas prices stabilize at $3.50 a gallon, that relatively efficient Corolla will cost the average driver more than $1,100 each year, and nearly as much in maintenance. Over a decade, that will total about $50,000. (Includes car purchase.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The $32,000 Leaf will cost about $600 a year to run, at average U.S. electricity prices, and about <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20260317205429\/https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/cmei\/vehicles\/articles\/fotw-1190-june-14-2021-battery-electric-vehicles-have-lower-scheduled\" title=\"\">maintenance<\/a>According to federal estimates.
