Jakarta, Indonesia — <\/span>At least three people were killed when a train collided with another train at a station outside the Indonesian capital on Monday, officials said.<\/p>\n “There are 29 victims who have been transported to three nearby hospitals,” Jakarta police chief Asep Edi Suheri told reporters at the scene in the suburb of Bekasi.<\/p>\n He said that investigation is going on.<\/p>\n The Argo Bromo Angrek long-distance train collided with the rear car of a commuter train stopped at Bekasi Timur Station, causing serious damage.<\/p>\n The car was designated for women only, a common accommodation to help avoid harassment.<\/p>\n Local television footage and videos on social media showed panicked passengers at the station. First responders and residents tried to evacuate passengers from train cars, while dozens of people rushed to the station for news of family members.<\/p>\n The vice president of corporate communications of PT Kereta AP Indonesia, the state-owned railway company, issued an apology to customers.<\/p>\n “At this time, all efforts are focused on evacuating passengers and crew, as well as assisting victims at the scene, while keeping safety as the highest priority,” Anne Purba said in a statement.<\/p>\n Purba said that passenger rail service has been disrupted in the area.<\/p>\n
