Trump said a shooting disrupted the White House Correspondents’ Association annual dinner, which he said underlined the urgent need for a controversial new White House ballroom.<\/p>\nQuestions were raised as to how an armed suspect could enter the Hilton Hotel without being stopped by security. The planned facility will include a new security bunker, a “drone-proof” roof and bulletproof glass, Trump said. Critics argue that despite seating for approximately 650 guests, it will not be large enough to host events such as the correspondents’ dinner.<\/p>\n

History of attacks<\/strong><\/p>\nThe latest incident involves a suspect, Cole Thomas Allen, 31, who is now in federal custody after a Saturday night shooting near the Washington Hilton, where the annual event was being held, authorities said.<\/p>\n
Authorities said Allen allegedly traveled from California, checked into the hotel before dinner, and attempted to breach security armed with a shotgun, handgun and a knife. Officers fired at the suspect before knocking him to the ground.<\/p>\n
Investigators said the suspect had distributed a manifesto outlining grievances against the Trump administration and expressing a desire to target the president and other officials. He reportedly referred to himself as the “Friendly Confederate Killer”.<\/p>\n
A US Secret Service officer was shot during the shootout but survived after the bullets grazed his protective gear, the agency said. The officer has since been discharged from the hospital.<\/p>\n
