All three contestants are standing at their lecture place. Then the two of them are captured by a suave bureaucrat from New Jersey named Jamie Ding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">But on Monday&#8217;s episode, the unthinkable happened: After 31 wins, Ding lost.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">His streak was &#8220;Jeopardy!&#8221; It is the fifth longest in India. History. He fell just one win short of equaling James Holzhauer&#8217;s 2019 run, and he left the Alex Trebek stage with more than $880,000 in winnings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">At the start of the game broadcast on Monday, Ding found himself trailing International Chess Master Greg Schaade, who was playing with lightning speed at the buzzer. During Final Jeopardy, Ding wrote the correct response to a clue about South African languages \u200b\u200b\u2013 but it was not enough to overcome the deficit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cIt ended just like that,\u201d Ding, 33, said in an interview.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The contestants fighting against him included a statistician, a librarian and a professor. Ding gave so many correct answers (always in the form of a question) that it seemed he might never finish.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">&#8220;Who was Trotsky?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">&#8220;What are non-Newtonian fluids?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">&#8220;What are waffle fries?&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">During his reign, he was factual as he came up with arcana (&#8220;What is cuneiform?&#8221;) in a moment. He endeared himself to the audience through his humorous banter with the show&#8217;s host Ken Jennings on topics such as his favorite color (orange), his favorite letter (F) and his favorite number (6).<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">As the series continued, drama-free anecdotes and humble pieces of personal information were shared by Ding Jennings, a former &#8220;Jeopardy!&#8221; Started making happy. The champion who has made the record of consecutive wins with 74.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Along with the depth of Ding&#8217;s knowledge went his lack of arrogance. He proudly identified himself as a &#8220;faceless bureaucrat&#8221;. He said he remained calm during his final game even though he realized he was headed for defeat. He went backstage and looked at the mostly orange clothes he had brought with him in hopes that his streak would continue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">&#8220;I&#8217;m trying to stay grounded during this time,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I&#8217;m planning on winning a lot of games of &#8216;Jeopardy!&#8217; It just feels like I&#8217;m asking to lose.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Ding filmed the five-episode show in Los Angeles during her days off from her job as a program administrator for the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency. His job includes managing tax credits to create affordable housing in the state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">In an initial appearance, he praised New Jersey&#8217;s efforts on the issue compared to New York, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. &#8220;If you&#8217;re in one of those states, shame on you,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Build more housing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">He spends his time away from work studying law at Seton Hall University. He said he didn&#8217;t expect his &#8220;Jeopardy!&#8221; The unexpected incident changed his life so much. He planned to donate some of the money and put the rest in a high-yield savings account.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Ding said, in a way, he had been preparing for this show since childhood. The son of a neuroscience professor and a high school mathematics teacher, he grew up in Grosse Pointe Shores, a suburb of Detroit. He competed in geography bees and on his high school quiz bowl team. He recalled losing a sixth-grade spelling bee when he misspelled the word &#8220;bolero&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cBalero,\u201d he said. &#8220;Horrible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">As an undergraduate at Princeton, he studied molecular biology, thinking he might become a doctor. But a year as a member of the AmeriCorps VISTA program in Jersey City, NJ inspired him to work to alleviate the housing crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Ding admitted that he was not a regular on &#8220;Jeopardy!&#8221; viewers until the beginning of this year. Nevertheless, he had given the online qualifying examination several times. In November 2024, a producer asked him to audition over Zoom. After learning she was cast, she began studying seriously.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">&#8220;I saw a big stack of books, like Atlas and a book by Isaac Asimov about Shakespeare,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">His sister, Jessie Ding, a 31-year-old attorney, introduced him to pop culture, introduced him to the HBO show &#8220;Industry&#8221; and helped him identify the faces of various celebrities. In that game, he answered 45 clues correctly and broke the record set by Jennings during his streak in 2004.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Ding was a relatively conservative player, avoiding all bets on Daily Doubles which was a strategy for Holzhauer. But he was unusually fast at the buzzer and seemed to have some weak ranges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cThe key to Jamie\u2019s success has been his incredibly broad base of knowledge in really any category you can think of,\u201d Saunders said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Ding used a strategy he called &#8220;knight moves&#8221; \u2013 crossing the board in an L-shaped pattern, like a knight in chess. Maybe that threw his opponents off balance, or maybe it was good to follow a simple rule, he said. He added, &#8220;It&#8217;s basically a guaranteed way to pick something of a different difficulty and in a different category.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">He made his first appearance on &#8220;Jeopardy!&#8221; Saw. At one bar in Jersey City, Pint had so many different groups of friends in attendance that it felt like it was a wedding. He&#8217;s still getting used to the attention that comes with being a TV star.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">&#8220;Watching my episodes, I can be quite self-critical \u2014 like, why did you do that? Or, what&#8217;s wrong with your face?&#8221; He said.
