Analysis: Report exposes the NHS mantra \u2013 it’s almost completely broken<\/h4>\n<\/p>\n
This report will make very difficult reading for many people.<\/p>\n
For the bereaved who were not allowed to say goodbye to loved ones who died alone in a hospital bed, for the healthcare workers who were brought to their knees under incredible pressure and are still living with the mental and physical burden of the pandemic today, and for non-COVID patients who became catastrophically ill because poor public messaging misled them into thinking they should not get treated for their heart attacks and strokes.<\/p>\n
Baroness Hallett’s report is damning. We all suspected that the healthcare system was close to collapse.<\/p>\n
But politicians and health service leaders kept repeating the same mantra: \u201cThe NHS copes because it has always coped.\u201d<\/p>\n
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve been told this. <\/p>\n
Well, this report tells us that almost didn’t happen. It was overwhelming. <\/p>\n
Not just because of the increasing number of infected patients, but because Britain’s healthcare system was already overwhelmed and in a precarious state. <\/p>\n
We were not prepared for the health emergency. Scaring is not in the public interest, but an unbiased and candid assessment of the situation will definitely help people understand the seriousness of the situation. <\/p>\n
Politicians argue that this was an unprecedented global health emergency and a rapidly changing landscape, but we now know that many more lives could have been saved if the NHS had been properly funded and resourced. <\/p>\n
The real heroes of this pandemic have, rightly, been praised; The country’s healthcare workers who risked their lives despite being exposed to the infection due to poor planning and lack of PPE.<\/p>\n
Without their herculean efforts, Britain’s healthcare system would have completely collapsed. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
Campaign group COVID-19 Bereaved Families for Justice described the report and its findings as “utterly damning”.<\/p>\n
It said the “devastating” impact on UK health systems during the pandemic could have been avoided.<\/p>\n
“Years of austerity have left the NHS dangerously exposed, without the staff, beds or flexibility needed to withstand a major shock,” the group said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat was a political choice.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd when the pandemic came, those in power failed us again.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey failed to act quickly enough, failed to follow the evidence, and failed to respond as promptly as the times demanded.\u201d<\/p>\n
Looking ahead, the group says the UK health service is now in a worse position to deal with another pandemic than it was six years ago.<\/p>\n

A government spokesman said it was “committed to learning the lessons of the Covid investigation.”<\/p>\n
