He spent 18 years in prison and was released in 1981. Although he was still considered an &#8220;enemy of the people&#8221;, he was later forced to work cleaning sewers in the city of Shkod\u00ebr. He secretly ran a priestly ministry until the fall of the regime in 1990. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text-(18px) md:text-(20px) first-of-type:mt-5 mt-(16px) lg:mt-(28px) leading-(28px) md:leading-8 normal \">Despite a complete ban on worship, he celebrated mass daily during his imprisonment, resorting to simple tricks to remain undetected. Since he said mass in Latin, his jailers thought he had gone mad and was only muttering incomprehensible words.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"text-2xl xl:text-3xl font-semibold mt-4\">Pope Francis&#8217; visit to Albania in 2014<\/h2>\n<p class=\"text-(18px) md:text-(20px) first-of-type:mt-5 mt-(16px) lg:mt-(28px) leading-(28px) md:leading-8 normal \">In 2014, when Pope Francis visited Albania, this elderly priest&#8217;s testimony moved him to tears. In 2016, the Pope created him a cardinal, publicly thanking him for a life of dedication that is &#8220;good for the Church.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-(18px) md:text-(20px) first-of-type:mt-5 mt-(16px) lg:mt-(28px) leading-(28px) md:leading-8 normal \">On April 7 this year, the Cardinal celebrated the 70th anniversary of his priestly ordination.
