For Pixel users, this includes Google’s always-present search bar at the bottom of their screen, which quickly connects them to apps or provides shortcuts to searching the web. But this is the first bread crumb on the path we are on today.

Here’s our next excerpt: Google Photos also references an app with the package name com.google.android.apps.pixel.launcherconnectorWhich we have not seen before. Before we start tossing out theories about what Google could do with this, we’ve got a few more strings that make up our final piece:

code

copy text

<string name=""search_pref_result_connector_title"">Apps in search results</string>
<string name=""search_pref_result_connector_desc"">Manage which apps show results in search</string>

We found these in the Pixel launcher in Google’s Android 17 beta. And looking at it all together, we begin to see where everything is shaping up.

It definitely feels like Google is creating a new framework to allow the Pixel Launcher’s search bar to interface with Android apps and search through the content within. While it may start with Google Photos, some of those strings seem so generic that we think Google intends to leave the door open for additional apps — maybe Google will eventually connect it to your Workspace apps so you can access Docs paperwork or stuff you save to Drive from this same location.

Google has been quite aggressive with Pixel Launcher search changes recently, so it’s entirely possible that we might get a chance to see this in action soon. However, this is all speculation right now, and while we’re optimistic about the potential of this tool, we’ll want to wait and see how Google ultimately delivers it before getting too excited.

⚠️ One tearing apk Helps to predict future features of a service based on work-in-progress code.
