Or who is it who has given you this authority?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-EHV-25775\" class=\"text Luke-20-3\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3 <\/sup>He answered them, &#8220;I will also ask you a question. Tell me: <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-25776\" class=\"text Luke-20-4\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4 <\/sup>The baptism of John\u2014was it from heaven or from men?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-EHV-25777\" class=\"text Luke-20-5\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5 <\/sup>They discussed among themselves, saying, \u201cIf we say, &#8216;From heaven,&#8217; he will say, &#8216;Why did you not believe in him?&#8217; <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-25778\" class=\"text Luke-20-6\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6 <\/sup>But if we say, &#8216;On behalf of men,&#8217; everyone will stone us, because they are convinced that John was a prophet.&#8221; <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-25779\" class=\"text Luke-20-7\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7 <\/sup>So they replied that they did not know where it came from.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-EHV-25780\" class=\"text Luke-20-8\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8 <\/sup>Jesus said to them, \u201cI will not tell you by what authority I am doing these things.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span id=\"en-EHV-25781\" class=\"text Luke-20-9\">parable of the wicked tenants<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"text Luke-20-9\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9 <\/sup>He began telling the people this parable: \u201cA man planted a vineyard, leased it out to some farmers, and went on a journey for a long time. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-25782\" class=\"text Luke-20-10\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10 <\/sup>When the right time came, he sent a servant to the farmers to collect their share of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenant farmers beat the servant and sent him away empty handed. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-25783\" class=\"text Luke-20-11\"><sup class=\"versenum\">11 <\/sup>The man went ahead and sent another servant, but they also beat him, insulted him and sent him back empty handed. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-25784\" class=\"text Luke-20-12\"><sup class=\"versenum\">12 <\/sup>Then he sent a third. They injured him too and threw him out. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-25785\" class=\"text Luke-20-13\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13 <\/sup>The owner of the vineyard said, &#8216;What should I do? I will send my Son, whom I love. Maybe they will respect him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-EHV-25786\" class=\"text Luke-20-14\"><sup class=\"versenum\">14 <\/sup>&#8220;But when the tenants saw him, they began to talk among themselves. They said, &#8216;This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, so that the inheritance may become ours.&#8217; <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-25787\" class=\"text Luke-20-15\"><sup class=\"versenum\">15 <\/sup>They threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. So what will the owner of the vineyard do with them? <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-25788\" class=\"text Luke-20-16\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16 <\/sup>He will come and destroy those tenant farmers and give the vineyard to others.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text Luke-20-16\">When they heard this they said, \u201cMay this never happen again!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-EHV-25789\" class=\"text Luke-20-17\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17 <\/sup>But he looked at them and said, what about this which is written:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text Luke-20-17\">The stone which the builders had rejected became the foundation stone?<sup style=\"font-size: 0.525em;line-height: normal;position: relative;vertical-align: text-top;top: auto\"> (1)<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-EHV-25790\" class=\"text Luke-20-18\"><sup class=\"versenum\">18 <\/sup>\u201cWhoever falls on that stone will be broken into pieces, and it will crush anyone on whom it falls.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-EHV-25791\" class=\"text Luke-20-19\"><sup class=\"versenum\">19 <\/sup>At that very moment the chief priests and the scribes began to seek a way to lay hands on him, because they knew that he had told this parable against them. But they were afraid of people.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span id=\"en-EHV-25792\" class=\"text Luke-20-20\">pay tribute to caesar<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"text Luke-20-20\"><sup class=\"versenum\">20 <\/sup>They watched him carefully and sent spies, who pretended to be honest, so that they could trap Jesus in something he said, and then deliver him over to the power and authority of the governor. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-25793\" class=\"text Luke-20-21\"><sup class=\"versenum\">21 <\/sup>They asked him, \u201cTeacher, we know that what you say and teach is right, and you show no partiality to anyone, but teach the way of God based on the truth. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-25794\" class=\"text Luke-20-22\"><sup class=\"versenum\">22 <\/sup>Is it right for us to pay tribute to Caesar or not?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-EHV-25795\" class=\"text Luke-20-23\"><sup class=\"versenum\">23 <\/sup>But he knew their deceit, and said to them; <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-25796\" class=\"text Luke-20-24\"><sup class=\"versenum\">24 <\/sup>\u201cShow me a dinar.<sup style=\"font-size: 0.525em;line-height: normal;position: relative;vertical-align: text-top;top: auto\"> (2)<\/sup> \u201cWhose image and inscription are there on it?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text Luke-20-24\">\u201cCaesar&#8217;s,\u201d they replied.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-EHV-25797\" class=\"text Luke-20-25\"><sup class=\"versenum\">25 <\/sup>He said to them, \u201cRender then to Caesar the things that are Caesar\u2019s, and to God the things that are God\u2019s.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-EHV-25798\" class=\"text Luke-20-26\"><sup class=\"versenum\">26 <\/sup>They could not implicate him in what he said in front of the people. They were surprised by his answer and became silent.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span id=\"en-EHV-25799\" class=\"text Luke-20-27\">living God<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"text Luke-20-27\"><sup class=\"versenum\">27 <\/sup>Some Sadducees (those who say there is no resurrection) came to him. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-25800\" class=\"text Luke-20-28\"><sup class=\"versenum\">28 <\/sup>They asked him a question, \u201cTeacher, Moses wrote for us that if someone&#8217;s brother dies, leaving his wife behind, but he has no children, then his brother should take that wife and raise children for his brother.<sup style=\"font-size: 0.525em;line-height: normal;position: relative;vertical-align: text-top;top: auto\"> (3)<\/sup> <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-25801\" class=\"text Luke-20-29\"><sup class=\"versenum\">29 <\/sup>Thus there were seven brothers. The first took a wife and died childless. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-25802\" class=\"text Luke-20-30\"><sup class=\"versenum\">30 <\/sup>Another took her as his wife,<sup style=\"font-size: 0.525em;line-height: normal;position: relative;vertical-align: text-top;top: auto\"> (4)<\/sup> <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-25803\" class=\"text Luke-20-31\"><sup class=\"versenum\">31 <\/sup>And the third also did the same, and in the same way all seven of them also died, and they had no children. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-25804\" class=\"text Luke-20-32\"><sup class=\"versenum\">32 <\/sup>Ultimately the woman also died. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-25805\" class=\"text Luke-20-33\"><sup class=\"versenum\">33 <\/sup>So in the resurrection, whose wife will she be? Because all seven of them found her as their wife.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-EHV-25806\" class=\"text Luke-20-34\"><sup class=\"versenum\">34 <\/sup>Jesus said to them, \u201cPeople of this generation marry and are given in marriage. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-25807\" class=\"text Luke-20-35\"><sup class=\"versenum\">35 <\/sup>But those who are of that age and considered worthy to experience the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given marriages. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-25808\" class=\"text Luke-20-36\"><sup class=\"versenum\">36 <\/sup>Actually, they can&#8217;t die anymore, because they&#8217;re like angels. They are the sons of God, because they are the sons of the resurrection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-EHV-25809\" class=\"text Luke-20-37\"><sup class=\"versenum\">37 <\/sup>&#8220;Even Moses told of the burning bush that the dead come alive, when he called upon God: &#8216;God of Abraham, God of Isaac, and God of Jacob.&#8217;<sup style=\"font-size: 0.525em;line-height: normal;position: relative;vertical-align: text-top;top: auto\"> (5)<\/sup> <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-25810\" class=\"text Luke-20-38\"><sup class=\"versenum\">38 <\/sup>He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to Him all are alive.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-EHV-25811\" class=\"text Luke-20-39\"><sup class=\"versenum\">39 <\/sup>Some experts in the law replied, \u201cTeacher, you are well said.\u201d <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-25812\" class=\"text Luke-20-40\"><sup class=\"versenum\">40 <\/sup>Then they did not dare to ask him anything.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span id=\"en-EHV-25813\" class=\"text Luke-20-41\">Son of David and Lord of David<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"text Luke-20-41\"><sup class=\"versenum\">41 <\/sup>Jesus said to them, \u201cHow do they say that the Christ is the Son of David? <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-25814\" class=\"text Luke-20-42\"><sup class=\"versenum\">42 <\/sup>David himself says in the book of Psalms:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"poetry top-1\">\n<p class=\"line\"><span class=\"text Luke-20-42\">The Lord said to my Lord,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Luke-20-42\">\u201cSit at my right hand, <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-25815\" class=\"text Luke-20-43\"><sup class=\"versenum mid-line\">43 <\/sup>until i make you an enemy<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Luke-20-43\">A stool under your feet.\u201d<sup style=\"font-size: 0.525em;line-height: normal;position: relative;vertical-align: text-top;top: auto\"> (6)<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"top-1\"><span id=\"en-EHV-25816\" class=\"text Luke-20-44\"><sup class=\"versenum\">44 <\/sup>\u201cSo David calls him \u2018Lord.\u2019 Then how is he his son?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span id=\"en-EHV-25817\" class=\"text Luke-20-45\">beware<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"text Luke-20-45\"><sup class=\"versenum\">45 <\/sup>While everyone was listening, Jesus said to his disciples, <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-25818\" class=\"text Luke-20-46\"><sup class=\"versenum\">46 <\/sup>\u201cBeware of experts in the law, who love to walk around in long robes and greet in the marketplaces, the best seats in synagogues, and places of honor at banquets. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-25819\" class=\"text Luke-20-47\"><sup class=\"versenum\">47 <\/sup>They swallow widows&#8217; houses and say long prayers to look good.
