To date, Filipino authorities have freed about 6,000 people from the centers, including more than 3,000 foreign nationals.

The role of the United Nations, through the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, includes drawing up new operating procedures that came into force this week.

One of the key changes is a shift towards a victim-centred response, which aims to close the gaps that once made it difficult to secure prosecution, as well as ensuring that victims are treated as survivors of trafficking rather than criminals.

scam compound spread

This shows that when a government is prepared to tackle scandal centers and corruption, the United Nations can provide effective assistance and jointly deliver results,” says Miklos Gaspar, Director of the United Nations Information Center in Indonesia:

Mr Gaspar said the scam has spread across Southeast Asia to lure people with fake job offers. Often, they are trapped and forced to commit online fraud.

Operations are typically part of a wider global criminal enterprise and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime has warned that organized fraud networks are becoming increasingly sophisticated, using advanced technologies and targeting victims around the world, generating billions in illicit profits.

Mass migration expected in Latin America and the Caribbean

Violence linked to organized crime, economic transformation, changing migration policies, increasing returns and deportations – and the growing impact of climate-related threats – are set to reshape migration in Latin America and the Caribbean.

With migration becoming increasingly complex and rapidly changing across the region, movements are no longer primarily driven by traditional patterns, but are now more diverse, multidirectional and dynamic, a new report The UN migration agency, IOM, disclosed on Thursday.

New routes are emerging, increasing pressure on border areas and urban centres.

Currently, approximately 80 million international migrants live in Latin America. In 2024 alone, 14.5 million internal displacements were recorded, mainly due to disasters, while displacements associated with conflict and violence reached almost 1.5 million.

preparing for the future

“This is not about predicting the future, but about preparing for different possible scenarios,” said Ana Duran Salvatierra, the region’s top IOM official.

“Migration will continue to grow. The main question is whether we react too late or prepare in advance.”

Intraregional migration remains a defining feature, including ongoing movements from the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, with approximately 6.9 million Venezuelans living in Latin America and the Caribbean, primarily in Colombia, Peru, Brazil, Chile, and Ecuador.

Rather than predicting exact outcomes, the IOM report develops plausible scenarios and highlights practical implications for planning, coordination and resource allocation, helping to move beyond reactive responses.

According to the UN Migration Agency, from the beginning of 2026, IOMMore than 300,000 people have been forced from their homes, with repeated displacement making it difficult for families to recover. “We and our humanitarian partners are prioritizing helping people in the most affected areas,” U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said at a regular afternoon briefing.

[57
445,1013,1950,27295,916,3774,615,18595,9274,1107,1935,166
0":"post-112311","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-bible-verse","8":"tag-america","9":"tag-displacement","10":"tag-fraud","11":"tag-hotbed","12":"tag-latin","13":"tag-migration","14":"tag-news","15":"tag-patterns","16":"tag-philippines","17":"tag-south","18":"tag-sudan","19":"tag-world
["GET
