The judge said he was given “no procedural protections” before his detention and ordered his release, barring future detention without proper notice.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"8\"\/>Batra was arrested on March 17 when ICE agents stopped him at Valley International Airport in Texas while traveling to a work assignment in Milwaukee. During his detention he was held at the El Valle Detention Facility in Raymondville.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"10\"\/>In a phone interview while in custody, she described the experience as tragic and said she “felt humiliated and treated like a criminal.”<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"12\"\/>His lawyer Deepak Ahluwalia said he was granted parole shortly before a federal judge issued an order temporarily blocking his release. He argued that the government had failed to explain why he was detained after living and working in the US for decades.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"14\"\/>“Today’s order from the federal district court reaffirms what we have said from the beginning: The government cannot detain people in the first place and then justify it,” Ahluwalia said.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"17\"\/>He said: “The court has now ordered his release and made it clear that due process is not optional. If the government wants to take away someone’s liberty, it has to provide notice and a fair opportunity of being heard.”<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"19\"\/>Batra has lived in the US for almost 35 years and is the mother of four adult children who are US citizens. He has worked as a certified court interpreter for over two decades and is believed to be the only licensed Punjabi, Hindi and Urdu interpreter in Texas.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"22\"\/>US Congressman Joaquin Castro criticized her detention, saying, “Meenu Batra is the only Punjabi, Hindi and Urdu court interpreter in Texas. She has spent most of her life working and raising her children in Texas. ICE detained her despite having humanitarian protections. Trump’s mass deportation campaign is not going after the worst-case scenario. It is targeting the breaking up of contributing members of our communities and families.“<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"26\"\/>According to US immigration authorities, Batra was issued a final deportation order in 2000. Officials said she entered the country for the first time without legal permission and that work authorization is not equivalent to legal immigration status.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"28\"\/>The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said he was detained during a targeted enforcement operation and stressed that it would continue to pursue removal cases involving people with deportation orders.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"31\"\/>However, Batra’s legal team argued that she was living under a “stay of removal” protection, which prevents deportation to countries where a person could be harmed, and allows them to live and work in the US, but without a path to citizenship.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Meenu Batra ” decoding=”async” fetchpriority=”high”\/> An Indian-origin court interpreter who has lived in the US for nearly 35 years has been released from the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after weeks of a legal battle over her custody.Meenu Batra, 53, who is known for interpreting Hindi, Punjabi and Urdu in Texas immigration courts,<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":115711,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[56],"tags":[445,21578,2931,2929,3591,1214,21577,4255,1122,1031],"class_list":{"0":"post-115710","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-bible-news","8":"tag-america","9":"tag-batra","10":"tag-custody","11":"tag-ice","12":"tag-indianorigin","13":"tag-living","14":"tag-meenu","15":"tag-months","16":"tag-released","17":"tag-years"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/christiancorner.us\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/115710","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/christiancorner.us\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/christiancorner.us\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/christiancorner.us\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/christiancorner.us\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=115710"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/christiancorner.us\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/115710\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":115712,"href":"https:\/\/christiancorner.us\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/115710\/revisions\/115712"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/christiancorner.us\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/115711"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/christiancorner.us\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=115710"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/christiancorner.us\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=115710"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/christiancorner.us\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=115710"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
