Whether you loved or hated Heidi Klum’s look for the Met Gala, it was, to say the least, stunning.<\/p>\n
The model and “Project Runway” host, also known as the Queen of Halloween, remained committed to her costume, arriving at the gala looking like a Roman statue \u2014 her interpretation of the night’s theme, “Fashion Is Art.”<\/p>\n
Her look was inspired by Rafael Monti’s 19th-century marble sculpture “Veiled Vestal”. To emulate Marble’s exact draped look, she turned to her longtime collaborator Mike Marino, the creative force behind her Halloween look and an Oscar-nominated makeup artist.<\/p>\n
The illusion was reassuring. While Klum appeared immobile and rigid, the garment was actually made of soft foam latex. “The design allows far more movement than it looks, so I can eat comfortably and use my hands,” Klum said in an email to The New York Times.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
She said the costume was so realistic that she could joke with guests inside the museum walls. “Whenever guests came I would stand completely still, convinced I was part of the decoration. Then, when I would walk over, they would be surprised.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
She added that removing it at the end of the night was an intense process in itself, and this morning she still found traces of makeup on her arm “even after showering twice.”<\/p>\n
It was a dream project for Marino, he said in an interview Tuesday.<\/p>\n
“I’ve always admired Michelangelo and Bernini and all the artists of the past,” he said. “When I was a kid I idolized those guys and studied their work. To be able to do this is a tribute to my ideals.”<\/p>\n
In a phone interview, which has been edited and condensed, he explained how it all came together.<\/p>\n
When did you start planning this look with Heidi?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n I think it started in February. These things take months to make \u2013 like for Halloween, we usually have six months. So it was a short timeframe, and it was as complex or more complex than any other Halloween look.<\/p>\n And how exactly did you create that elusive marble look?<\/strong><\/p>\n Well, everything we do is magic. The ingredients are foam latex \u2013 so it’s latex, but it’s whipped in a special blender to thicken it, almost like whipped cream. And then we inject him into a mold of his entire body. It is then sent to a special oven and cooked at a certain temperature.<\/p>\n Once we have this spongy, lightweight substance, that’s when the specialist’s work begins. Only then do we paint the entire design to look like marble, down to every vein, every crack, every little spot of marble. Then we sprayed this special iridescent spray on it to get that reflective marble type quality, and we sprayed a gloss sealer, a flexible sealer on it, to make it look tough.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n So the curtain that appears to be draped over it – is that a piece of molded latex?<\/strong><\/p>\n Most of it is a bodysuit that we designed to shape around her body, and it closes at the back with zippers and clasps that are hidden within the folds. We made separate sleeves for the arms. And then the face is a separate piece that sticks to the suit and his face. The hands are also separate pieces.<\/p>\n Oh, I thought his hands were painted to look like marble.<\/strong><\/p>\n The palms are painted, but the tops of the hands are smooth, like marble hands look \u2013 very smooth, and they have these very distinctive dimples on the knuckles. And the fingers are also smooth; There are no lines on them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n So, how long did she have to sit in that makeup chair to do this?<\/strong><\/p>\n I think it was like four or five hours.<\/p>\n It’s no big deal to Heidi, right? I remember she was in the makeup chair for about eight hours for her last Halloween look.<\/strong><\/p>\n Oh yes, five hours, she can do that anytime.
