The 2026 Met Gala asked a simple question: Is fashion art? Attached to the Costume Institute’s “Costume Art” exhibit, celebrities like co-chair Beyonc\u00e9, Met Gala veterans Rihanna and Janelle Mon\u00e1e, as well as breakout star Chase Infinity were on hand to prove the point, each channeling their inner art connoisseur. But some took it a step further and used the opportunity to put Black art front and center on the Met steps. It’s a welcome gesture following the 2025 Met Gala theme “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” which celebrated Black designers. Continuity sends the message that our identity is more than just a passing trend.\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Beyonce wore a custom design by Olivier Rousteing tschabala sva<\/a> Brandon Blackwood, while Amy Sherald \u2014 best known for her 2018 portrait of Michelle Obama \u2014 wore a blue gown with red accents inspired by her painting with Thom Browne.Miss Everything (Unsuppressed Deliverance)<\/a>.” Black art wasn’t just included in the exhibit (represented by Telfer bags in various skin-tone colors and African antiquities)\u2014it was all over the carpet.\n<\/p>\n

Serving as co-chair this year, Venus Williams literally paraphrased “Fashion is Art” as she wore a black gown made of Swarovski crystals, inspired by her 2022 portrait at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, painted by a Bronx artist. robert pruitt<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Leaving the Carlyle Hotel, he wore a blue Superman T-shirt and aviator shades inspired by Barclay Hendrix. On the Met Gala red carpet, she continued the reference in an all-white look, again nodding to Hendrix’s work.\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Everyone’s favorite image architect Law Roach (sans Zendaya) also went for the material art angle, wearing a custom collaboration between AMI and the Gabonese artist. naila opiangah<\/a>A white suit with a painted body.\n<\/p>\n

Some stars expressed their appreciation for black art by using their glamour, hair and makeup as a canvas. Gabrielle Union, in a sequined brown form-fitting Michael Kors dress, wore her hair in a large, double crown as a tribute to the photographer kwame brathwaite<\/a>A leading figure in the “Black is Beautiful” movement of the 1960s. Her work celebrated black women, natural hair, and beauty in a time of racial unrest and narrow beauty standards.\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Ciara took a similar approach, channeling Egypt’s Queen Nefertiti in an embellished gold gown with matching accessories. The piece de resistance was a Gilded, Sculpted Child Moment<\/a> Created by Cesar Ramirez and inspired by the iconic crown of Nefertiti. <\/p>\n

It’s impressive to see Black Met Gala guests using their platforms to highlight Black art in such a visible way. It’s also a notable change that celebrities took over representation this year, which contrasts from last year when the museum, its curators and the festival planning committee all supported black designers and artists. <\/p>\n

Either way, by the end of the night, it became clear that Black Art was, is and always will be that moment. <\/p>\n
