BCE says it has dismissed a “small number” of employees after an internal investigation found they had allegedly falsified workplace attendance records.<\/p>\n
Bell Canada’s parent company said some employees engaged in “swipe and go” behavior by entering offices, registering attendance with a security card, and then immediately leaving.<\/p>\n
According to company spokesperson Luc Levasseur, the incidents were identified in offices across Canada. <\/p>\n
An employee reportedly came to the office shortly before midnight and again an hour later to attend on two different days. <\/p>\n
Another reportedly entered the company premises to use the fitness facilities before leaving.<\/p>\n
“In each case, a thorough investigation was conducted and the individuals were presented with clear evidence of their misconduct,” Levasseur said.<\/p>\n
“Most of the individuals have admitted to knowingly and repeatedly falsifying workplace attendance,” he said.<\/p>\n
BCE said unionized employees were not affected and stressed that no widespread workforce reduction program was underway.<\/p>\n
The company currently requires most corporate employees to work in the office three days a week.<\/p>\n
Employment lawyers say dismissal “for cause” is unusual in Canada because it can result in workers losing severance rights. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
