13 <\/sup>Pilate gathered the chief priests, rulers, and people. <\/span> 14 <\/sup>And he said to them, You have brought this man to me considering him to be misleading the people. Look, I have examined it before you. I have not found any basis for the allegations you make on this. <\/span> 15 <\/sup>Neither did Herod, because he sent him back to us. (1)<\/sup> Look, he hasn’t done anything that deserves death. <\/span> 16 <\/sup>So I will flog him and let him go.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Barabbas or Jesus?<\/span><\/h4>\n

17 <\/sup>Pilate needed to release a prisoner for them at the festival. (2)<\/sup> <\/span> 18 <\/sup>But they all shouted with one voice, “Take him away! Leave Barabbas for us!” <\/span> 19 <\/sup>Barabbas was thrown into prison for rebellion and murder in the city.<\/span><\/p>\n

20 <\/sup>Pilate addressed them again, because he wanted to release Jesus. <\/span> 21 <\/sup>But they kept shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”<\/span><\/p>\n

22 <\/sup>He said to them the third time, “Why? What evil has he done? I find no grounds for sentencing him to death. So I will flog him and release him.” <\/span> 23 <\/sup>But they kept pressing him loudly, demanding that he be crucified. and their voices (3)<\/sup> Were tremendous. <\/span> 24 <\/sup>Therefore Pilate decided that what they asked would be fulfilled. <\/span> 25 <\/sup>He released the one they asked for, who had been thrown into prison for rebellion and murder, but he handed Jesus over according to their wish.<\/span><\/p>\n
