The missile, named Yildirimhan \u2013 the name is derived from Turkish words associated with \u201clightning ruler\u201d or \u201cgod of thunder\u201d \u2013 was revealed during the SAHA Expo 2026 defense and aerospace exhibition in Istanbul. The name itself appears to be designed to convey speed, power and dominance, reflecting Ankara’s growing military ambitions on the world stage.<\/p>\n
Developed by the Turkish Ministry of National Defense Research and Development Centre, the missile reportedly has a range of up to 6,000 kilometres, putting much of Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and large parts of Asia within striking distance.<\/p>\n
Turkish officials said the missile is capable of carrying a payload of up to 3,000 kilograms and can travel at speeds ranging from Mach 9 to Mach 25. The system reportedly uses liquid nitrogen tetroxide fuel and a four-engine propulsion design.<\/p>\n
Turkish Defense Minister Yasar G\u00fcler said the changing global security landscape has accelerated T\u00fcrkiye’s efforts toward military self-reliance.<\/p>\n
“Recent wars and conflicts have provided very important data for security theory, as well as increased our responsibilities,” G\u00fcler said, referencing the Russia-Ukraine war as well as recent conflicts involving Iran, the United States and Israel.<\/p>\n
Turkey has aggressively expanded its domestic defense industry in recent years following tensions with NATO allies and its withdrawal from the F-35 fighter jet program. Ankara now aims to meet almost all of its military needs domestically by 2030.<\/p>\n
The Yildirimhan missile is just one part of a broader military modernization effort underway under President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan. Turkey is also developing the KAAN fifth-generation fighter jet, building the Altai main battle tank, expanding its naval fleet with new submarines and destroyers, and increasing production of advanced drones and hypersonic missile systems.<\/p>\n
Last week, Turkey also successfully test-fired the Tayfun Block-4 ballistic missile, which reportedly exceeds Mach 5 speed and has a range of about 800 kilometers. Officials say mass production is expected by 2026.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Ankara recently launched its $6.5 billion “Steel Dome” initiative, a layered air defense network designed to rival systems like Israel’s Iron Dome. The project aims to defend Turkish territory against aircraft, drone and ballistic missile threats.<\/p>\n
President Erdogan declared that the Steel Dome system would “instill confidence among friends and fear among enemies.”<\/p>\n
