Netflix’s conflict-heavy anthology series beef<\/em>From creator Lee Sung Jin, it recently concluded its second season, pitting wealthy country club manager Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan, played by Kelly Spaeny and Charles Melton, against each other for help. The first season then involved Steven Yeun and Ali Wong in a road-rage scenario, which escalated to operatic levels of chaos before the episode’s end. All dramatic, but also fun! There’s nothing wrong with a little conflict, as long as it’s happening with other people.<\/p>\n Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini make one of the all-time great TV duos in this dark, twisty comedy about a few women united in tragedy and lies. Applegate is Jane Harding, a realtor whose husband was killed in a hit-and-run incident; She is not behaving well, and takes a little inspiration from Cardellini’s Judy, who has maintained a cheerful disposition after her fianc\u00e9 Steve’s death from a heart attack \u2013 easy to do, given that Steve is still secretly alive. And then we find out that Judy has a storage unit that contains a car that looks suspiciously like the car that killed Jane’s husband – and that’s all part of the first episode. From there the show gets even wilder\u2014like beef<\/em>But sneakier and more passive-aggressive. She is also the only black woman working for the company, and is initially thrilled when Hazel-Mae McCall (Ashley Murray) is hired as a fellow editorial assistant and second black girl. At first quiet Nella and outspoken Hazel connect with each other, but Nella starts receiving threatening notes and Hazel’s advice gets her into trouble. Is it a comedy show about two black women who can’t work together without conflict and competition? Or is there some deep secret? (It’s quite the second one, FYI). Writer and co-creator Sharon Horgan plays Eva Garvey, the eldest of five sisters, including Grace (Anne-Marie Duff), who is married to John Paul, an abusive and estranged husband. When the man turns up dead under suspicious circumstances, insurance investigator Tom (Brian Gleeson) starts poking his nose into things when his luck goes down. We know the sisters definitely wanted John Paul dead, but did they actually do it? Tom’s family business would go under if he had to pay out on the life insurance policy, so he is motivated to blame the (potential) crime on at least one woman. Stream bad sisters<\/em><\/u> On Apple TV.<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n Similarities between another dark comic, the season-long anthology series, Our Subject and White lotus<\/em> became even stronger in the second season of beef<\/em>Joe finds some of the managers of a luxury country club in an increasingly escalating feud for help. Meanwhile, the opening episode of Mike White’s show begins with a glimpse of the dire consequences that at least some holidaymakers will face if they travel to one of the White Lotus resorts of the title (each season is a different story and location, sometimes with a recurring character). The first season’s manager, Murray Bartlett’s Armand, explains to the staff that the ultra-wealthy guests are little more than big children, and need to be pampered just like that. At these very fancy resorts, where people have paid absurd amounts of money to be pampered, the competitiveness and general toxicity ensures that everyone has a miserable time, no matter the price. In an effort to maintain the illusion that nothing has changed in his life, he begins burglarizing his wealthy neighbors’ homes and selling their belongings, inadvertently capturing their secrets as well. This dark comedy isn’t really about how hard it is to be a once-rich white man, but nor is it a clear lesson about the fallacies of toxic masculinity. Cop is an insider who is forced into the role of an outsider (while playing the role of an insider), which gives him a unique perspective on the manipulation at the center of a life based on appearances of wealth. Stream your friends and neighbors<\/em><\/u> On Apple TV.<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n Bill Hader won a few Emmy Awards for his performance as Barry Berkman, a depressed and anxious hitman who discovers a love for acting that leads him to seek a life beyond killing people, even though he is good at it, and keeps getting involved in it again and again. Barry’s quest to rebuild his life on stage is fully supported by the wildly eccentric Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler, who also won an Emmy here) as his mentor and father. Barry\u2014until he learns about his prot\u00e9g\u00e9’s double life. Stream Barry<\/em> on HBO Max.<\/strong><\/p>\n This season-by-season anthology crime drama finds us in the Midwest, mostly, mixing crime drama, small-town mystery, and a healthy heaping of dark humor (if you’re familiar with the Cohen Brothers film that inspired the show, you’ll know exactly what that means). The quirky characters in the changing cast are sometimes lovable, sometimes reprehensible, but they are consistently compelling \u2013 such as beef<\/em>It makes sense that the characters will get what’s coming to them, while also making room for moments of surprising grace. Three high school friends from Belfast reunite after learning that their fourth bestie has died unexpectedly – except maybe she didn’t die, which is a mixed blessing considering they all have secrets they were hoping to bury. Now they set out to investigate a possible murder mystery, and quickly find themselves in way<\/em> over their heads and into a complex web of lies, secrets and old vendettas. The tone is all over the place in a way that somehow works, and beneath all the chaos there is a beating heart. There is a lack of support at home as the dominant penis in some photographs is not that of her husband. Lucy Prebble and Piper resume the collaboration that started Secret Diary of a Call Girl<\/em> and highly acclaimed drama Effect<\/em> For this dark, funny show about a woman on the verge of breaking down. Piper, as always, is wonderful playing a character whose biography is very similar to hers \u2013 the whole world is out to get her, but early fame has left her extremely vulnerable and wildly self-involved. Stream i hate suzy<\/em> on HBO Max.<\/strong><\/p>\n I’m attributing this largely to Lisa Kudrow, but there’s a similar form of dark comedy here\u2014as well, no good work<\/em> It’s a great show that a lot of people haven’t seen. The setup sounds like a juicy crime thriller: Kudrow is retired pianist Lydia; Ray Romano is her husband Paul. Both are in dire financial straits and need to sell their house even though they don’t want to. seem <\/em>Very desperate for potential buyers \u2013 and also harbors a secret involving a death that occurred a few years ago. For all that, this is a comedy, with a great supporting cast that includes Linda Cardellini, Luke Wilson, OT Fagbenle, and Teyonah Parris.
