Thanks to this, we get a good life, a loving spouse, good health throughout life, sexual pleasure when we want, and paid holidays for the rest of our lives. The world has told us that if we work hard and do the right thing we deserve these things. This is Esau’s outlook on life. Just for the sake of food, they sold their birthright for the simple happiness they were entitled to.

Society and even the church are more pleasure-centered than ever. Christian researcher George Barna quotes:

We are not a society that simply enjoys its leisure. Our hunger for leisure motivates us. It’s common to hear that people turn down job offers because the hours or other responsibilities interfere with their hobbies, fitness routines, and other free-time activities. Even our spending habits show that playing has become a major priority. The average family spends more money on entertainment than on clothing, health care, furniture or gasoline. The time devoted to recreational activities has increased by more than 10 percent. (George Barna, Frog in the Kettle (Ventura, California: Regal Books, 1990), 82.)

What are the purposes of our work life? Is it just to get more fun and free time? Jesus said that He came only to do the Father’s work. I am sure that there was a time of refreshment in the life of Jesus that allowed him to be refreshed for the mission to which God called him. However, he understood the balance of maintaining the mission and the game. When we view life from the perspective of entitlement, we become disappointed, angry, and even bitter when our expectations are not met. Ask the Lord if you need to give up any possessions that might hinder your freedom to experience His love and grace.

eligibility “And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross!” – Philippians 2:8 Society today has deceived many of us into believing that the world owes us.
