--mobile-height: 300px;\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_39063065\" class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-caption alignnone aligncenter\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span>A pallet of medical supplies has been dropped on the island<\/span> <span class=\"credit\">Credits: Mandatory Credits: All use and\/or reproduction will be acknowledged as follows: Images: AS1 Georgia Callaway, UK MOD \u00a9 Crown Copyright 2025<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_39063066\" class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-caption alignnone aligncenter\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span>A400M is on its way to deliver vital medical supplies and personnel<\/span> <span class=\"credit\">Credit: UK MOD Crown Copyright<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Brigadier Cartwright, boss of 16 Air Assault Brigade, said: \u201cThe arrival of paratroopers, medical personnel and medical supplies <span id=\"b0cccd3d-6f30-4499-a638-d07f56730c30\" class=\"suggested-link\">Sky<\/span> &#8220;Hopefully this has reassured the people of Tristan da Cunha.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The island, located in the depths of the South Atlantic, has a population of only 221 people, including two doctors, and no airstrip.<\/p>\n<p>Six soldiers and two medics jumped together from the rear ramp of an RAF A400M <span id=\"63449ec4-3f13-4de7-9dad-41a1652b404e\" class=\"suggested-link\">transportation<\/span> plane.<\/p>\n<p>They fled from RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, approximately 10,000 km from Tristan da Cunha.<\/p>\n<p>They flew 6,800 km to Ascension Island, the nearest settlement to Britain, then flew 3,000 km to Tristan da Cunha, deep in the South Atlantic.<\/p>\n<p>The MoD said: &#8220;With oxygen supplies on the island at critical levels, the airdrop with medical personnel was the only way to get critical care to the patient in a timely manner.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Armed Forces Al Carnes, a former Special Forces commando, said: &#8220;This was an extraordinary operation in incredibly challenging circumstances to get vital assistance to our citizens on Tristan da Cunha.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He further said, &#8220;I would like to pay a huge tribute to our brave personnel for doing their job with utmost professionalism and composure even under pressure.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The soldiers and medics were pulled from 16 Air Assault Bridge, home of the elite parachute regiment in Colchester, Essex.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said: \u201cI am extremely grateful to the armed forces and RAF personnel who acted swiftly to get immediate medical attention to Tristan da Cunha.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis extraordinary operation demonstrates our unwavering commitment to the people of our overseas territories and to British nationals, wherever they are.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cThe safety and well-being of all members of the British family is our first priority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Ministry of Defense said: &#8220;Weather conditions in Tristan da Cunha can be exceptionally challenging, with average wind speeds often exceeding 25 mph, presenting difficult conditions for paratroopers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Daredevil Army medics are parachuted into the world&#8217;s most remote inhabited island to treat a suspected case of Hantavirus.
