The surge came after factory-gate prices turned positive for the first time in three years, ending the longest deflationary streak in decades. <strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The price rise has been aided by a surge in global commodity prices as the Iran war, now in its third month, has reduced traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, sending energy markets into a tailspin.  <\/p>\n<p>China, the world&#8217;s biggest crude importer, has cushioned the worst of the energy shock through its strategic oil reserves and a diverse mix of renewable energy sources &#8211; although economists warn the buffer is at limits as disruptions grow.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108304619\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108304619\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000412457\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Data released on Saturday revealed China&#8217;s crude oil imports <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.customs.gov.cn\/customs\/2026-05\/09\/article_2026050910092460489.html\">Fell 20% in April in terms of volume<\/a><strong> <\/strong>From a year ago. <\/p>\n<p>However, the country&#8217;s overall export growth accelerated last month. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.customs.gov.cn\/customs\/2026-05\/09\/article_2026050910092373174.html\">increasing 14.1% from a year ago<\/a> and leading monthly trade surplus <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.customs.gov.cn\/customs\/2026-05\/09\/article_2026050910092373174.html\">$84.8 billion<\/a> &#8211; Putting the country on track to post a nearly trillion-dollar surplus for the third consecutive year. <\/p>\n<p>The export strength that has increased China&#8217;s trade surplus with the US <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.customs.gov.cn\/customs\/2026-05\/09\/article_2026050910092464800.html\">up to $87.7 billion<\/a> So far this year, next week will be in focus as US President Donald Trump prepares to visit Beijing for the leaders&#8217; summit.  <\/p>\n<p>Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to host Trump this weekend, as the two countries seek to stabilize relations strained by tensions over trade, export controls, Taiwan and the Iran war.  <\/p>\n<p>Beijing, which hosted Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi last week, has positioned itself as an active mediator in efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, Goldman Sachs economists said, expecting the Middle East conflict to figure prominently at the summit. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ArticleBody-googlePreferredSourceContainer\" data-module=\"GooglePreferredSource\" data-id=\"RegularArticle-GooglePreferredSource-5\">Choose CNBC as your favorite source on Google and never miss a moment of the most trusted name in business news.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A shopper walks past a Coach retail store inside a shopping mall in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, China on March 24, 2026.
