This is the law.

There are two examples where two local restaurants have posted job postings without pay. Someone pointed this out in the comments and it became a big issue, where people protested, saying that it’s unfair for small-town business owners to know this (a basic, now three-year-old law).

This ultimately culminated in two separate ways: a massive Reddit post where the restaurant apologized and asked for resumes and still did not include the salary in the post, which, once it was pointed out, led to the post being locked. The other restaurant made a very long post about how they run their business, how they run their business and can report all they want.

So I ask you and the readers, what will you do as a viewer? On one hand, I think restaurants consistently underpay and take advantage of young workers and it’s not hard to put a basic $18-$20/hour wage in the job description. Reporting a violation is very easy – just a form with a screen shot. On the other hand, local institutional restaurants are beloved members of the community and clearly have their supporters. Closing them would be a loss to the community (and the local food scene). Again, no skin in this game. I know both of them were reported so the government will keep an eye on them.

I am willing to give a small business some leniency if they are not aware of a change in the law, but once they are informed, they will not get any leniency if they do not comply. “This is how we run our business, regardless of what the law requires” should get zero respect or support when their motivation is to continue harming workers.

If they don’t like the law, they can lobby their legislators to change it (a very good reason to keep the discussion going about possible legal changes in your area!).

And if they are openly violating the democratically passed laws of the community, should they be such a beloved member of the community?

They’re not even discussing the issue, like explaining their opposition to the requirement and how it impacts their ability to stay in business – which still wouldn’t prevent them from following the law, but would be a far more respectful way to engage than the “too bad, we don’t care” stance they’ve adopted instead.

I stand with everyone who reported them.

A reader writes: This is a completely low-risk question, inspired by the city’s Facebook group.
