He testified that he “didn’t know what happened” that day in September 2020 but admitted that he hit the boys with his vehicle while Grossman was speeding behind them, but that it did not happen.

Grossman, 62, was convicted of second-degree murder in 2024 and is serving a 15-years-to-life prison sentence for the boys’ deaths. She and Erickson are being sued for wrongful death by the boy’s parents, and Erickson was called as a witness in the civil trial in Van Nuys on Monday.

Midway through the trial, Erickson was not present in court. During questioning Monday he told jurors he was in Mexico with a girlfriend. But much of her testimony Monday concerned her past relationship with Grossman, co-founder of the Grossman Burn Foundation and wife of renowned surgeon Peter Grossman.

On the stand, Erickson, 58, admitted that she had deleted several messages she had with Grossman after she killed the boys on Sept. 29, 2020. He also admitted that when the police asked him to return the Mercedes he was driving on the day of the accident, he gave them another vehicle instead.

According to testimony at the criminal trial, Erickson and Grossman were drinking margaritas at a local cantina before the pair got into their respective vehicles and drove to Grossman’s home to watch the presidential debate.

On the stand Monday, Erickson admitted to sending messages to Grossman leading up to the end of his murder trial in 2024.

“There’s my girl,” he wrote her just days after the fatal accident.

However, when his son asked him to leave his family alone, the messages stopped, he said.

The former World Series-winning pitcher did not testify in Grossman’s high-profile 2024 criminal trial.

<picture></picture>

Rebecca Grossman, left, at the Van Nuys Courthouse during her criminal trial in February 2024.

(Irrfan Khan/Los Angeles Times)

In that proceeding, Grossman’s lawyers tried to pin the blame for the boys’ deaths on Erickson, claiming that it was his SUV, not his, that struck the children first.
