As well as having a mix of business and technical skills, professionals wishing to advance in today’s and tomorrow’s economy need to demonstrate “a tenacious spirit and a tenacious personality”.

Also: Worried AI agents will replace you? 5 ways you can turn concern into action at work

This is the advice from a senior executive at one of the world’s leading technology infrastructure organizations, who says IT implementation is no longer a one-off task. “New technology takes a lot of trial and error,” he said Andrew AllenSenior Vice President of Financial Operations for the CIO Office at Siemens. “What do you want it to do? How do you want it to go?” Yet, at the same time, Allen said he doesn’t think AI will replace the skills of technology professionals at his company.

Solving business challenges

ZDNET recently spoke with Allen at the Salesforce AgentForce event in New York, where he discussed steering the organization with more than 250,000 employees globally on a new course in an increasingly AI-saturated world.

Combined technology and business skills are in high demand at Siemens, a giant conglomerate that produces and sells digital and automation solutions for a range of heavy industries. The company looks for business architects and like-minded professionals, Allen said, “who have a deep understanding of the complexities of the business and the problems we’re trying to solve, and who are able to translate that into technical solutions.”

“When you start looking at what agents can do, you need people who can translate that and understand it,” he said. “It also means that before you start, you need a good idea of what you are doing, you need user stories, ethics, ROI and a business case.”

Also: Building an agentic AI strategy that pays off without the risk of business failure

Allen acknowledged that connecting agents throughout the organization means more complexity, which requires management skills: “You have to figure out what you want – what’s your north star? What do you want the technology to do? What business problem are you trying to solve? If you can ground your use cases in the business opportunity or the business problem, it really helps you implement the technology.”

He adds that business architects need some degree of experience: “Generally, a minimum of 10 years of planning and analysis experience is expected,” according to industry expert. “In addition to some systems background, the business architect will have a broad background in a variety of business areas, with deep experience and knowledge in at least one aspect of the business – for example, engineering, manufacturing, planning, etc.”

Also: 5 Myths of the Agentic Coding Apocalypse

Allen explained that the role of a business architect is different from that of an enterprise architect. An enterprise architect considers applications and infrastructure for a technology roadmap, while a business architect talks with the R&D segment, chief revenue officer, and pricing and packaging experts.

“They ask, ‘Okay, what are the capabilities that you guys are looking for? What are our go-to-market strategies? What are our products?’ They bring it back and say, ‘Okay, this is the direction the business wants to go, how does this match our architectural roadmap? Are there any supplemental areas? Are there areas on which we have to argue?

New skills for new demands

Siemens recently launched a “One Tech Company” strategy, seeking to blend digital and real-world technologies into an approach that integrates software, hardware, AI and digital twins for both its internal operations and customers. “It’s a way to strap a jetpack on what we’re doing and really accelerate the growth we want,” Allen said.

He said he doesn’t think AI is consuming technology jobs at his company: “I’m old enough to remember when the Internet was going to put libraries out of business, or the Y2K bug, or blockchain, or the next shiny thing.”

Also: I Asked 5 Data Leaders How They Use AI to Automate – and End Integration Nightmares

At the same time, he cautioned that “AI may prove quite challenging in areas where you have high-touch horizontals.” That process, Allen said, will include “identifying the low-hanging fruit where you can automate tasks that are very repetitive in nature.” Examples of areas suitable for what he calls “agentification” include operational tasks, such as validating sales leads or extracting metrics from systems.

The good news is that business architects and like-minded roles enhance human skills. At Siemens, he said there is an emphasis on encouraging professionals “to develop deep domain knowledge from a vertical perspective. AI can really enhance what we do.”

Such professionals help enable and oversee multiple vertical processes, including product design, development, deployment, production, and manufacturing. Allen said that new technologies “free our employees from mundane repetitive tasks, so we can start to look at higher-value tasks for the jobs of the future. We need business architects who can better understand where the business is going.”

Also: 1 in 2 security leaders say they are unprepared for AI attacks – 4 actions to take right now

Allen said there is also a huge demand for professionals who can oversee user acceptance testing (UAT) – especially as AI agents accelerate software deployment. The skills to provide change management are also in demand, as well as “having people who understand the psychology of change. They can answer the questions, ‘What’s in it for me, what’s in it for my organization?'”

He suggested that our current times could be seen as “never normal”, in which “technology is overtaking organizational design and organizational structure. Some of the biggest challenges for organizations right now is that technology can do everything you want it to do.”

Allen concludes: “The question is, from a human perspective, what do you want it to do? And then how do you actually scale up your workforce to take advantage of it? My fear with some technology is that it is used to recreate existing cart paths, not to create a new highway that will take you somewhere you’ve never been before.”

jackyenjoyphotography/moment/Getty Images Follow ZDNET: Add us as a favorite source On Google.
