The newspaper says Beijing has used the conflict to reach out to Gulf and Indo-Pacific countries to gain a better understanding of the US military.\n <\/p>\n

The US-Israeli war against Iran has given China a strategic opportunity to eliminate US influence on every major front, the Washington Post reported on Wednesday, citing a classified intelligence analysis.<\/p>\n

Two US officials familiar with the matter told the newspaper that the document was prepared by the Joint Staff’s intelligence directorate for General Dan Kaine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. It is said to focus on four main dimensions: diplomatic, informational, military and economic.<\/p>\n

This comes ahead of US President Donald Trump’s high-level talks with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in Beijing.<\/p>\n

Since the war between the US and Israel began in late February, China has reportedly sold weapons to Persian Gulf countries, which came under Iranian missile and drone attacks in retaliation, the report said. Although Beijing has denied supplying arms to Iran, in recent years it has engaged in billion-dollar arms deals with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.<\/p>\n

Regarding the informational domain, according to the report, since the Iran war was not approved by the US Congress or the UN Security Council, it allowed China to portray it as illegal as it wanted. “Undermine America’s image as a responsible steward of the rules-based international order.”<\/em> <\/p>\n

The war has also destroyed US military resources, particularly its stockpile of cruise and air defense missiles, which would be vital in a potential standoff over Taiwan, the document said.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, an earlier WaPo report suggested that Iranian attacks on US military installations throughout the region were far more damaging than Washington had acknowledged, with at least 228 structures and equipment damaged or destroyed.<\/p>\n

The newspaper says that meanwhile, China has got a better understanding of how the US military works and has planned accordingly.<\/p>\n

Last but not least, while China, the world’s largest oil importer, has been affected by the Hormuz crisis, it has maintained energy self-sufficiency due to its coal production and green technology boom. According to WaPo, this has allowed Beijing to play an energy benefactor role by reaching out to Thailand, Australia, the Philippines and others with supplies of jet fuel and green energy technology.

“China is the second most insulated country in the world from the energy crisis after the United States.”<\/em> Ryan Haas, a China expert at the Brookings Institution, told the newspaper.

“This is not altruism,”<\/em> He added. “This is Beijing taking advantage of the opportunity to create discord between the United States and its traditional partners.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Beijing has called for an end to hostilities in the Middle East and condemned the US military action.
