Jerusalem (meaningful news<\/a>) \u2013 Japan’s prime minister confirmed Thursday that a Japanese supertanker emerged in the Gulf of Oman after a rare “dark transit” through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz without broadcasting its location.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said the Japanese ship had made way and stressed that Tokyo was urging Tehran to ensure “free and safe transit” for all ships traveling through the strategic waterway.<\/p>\n

The tanker, Eneos Endeavour, last signaled inside the Persian Gulf north of Abu Dhabi on Monday and reappeared near Oman’s capital Muscat late Wednesday on its way to the Arabian Sea, according to ship-tracking data.<\/p>\n

The apparent temporary loss of the tracking signal came amid rising regional tensions and rising security concerns around shipping routes linked to global oil supplies through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy chokepoints, which Iran has blocked, Bloomberg news agency reports.<\/p>\n

About a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas shipments pass through the narrow waterway between Iran and Oman, making any disruption there a major concern for global energy markets and shipping companies.<\/p>\n

The ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which escalated in late February, remains tense in the region amid fears of possible Iranian retaliation against Western interests and repeated warnings from Tehran over foreign military activity near its waters.<\/p>\n

Western governments have also increased naval surveillance in the Gulf amid concerns about potential attacks, seizure or harassment of commercial vessels.<\/p>\n

The tanker is listed as part of Enios Holdings’ fleet, the company’s website shows. A spokesperson for the company declined to comment, saying it does not disclose the operational status of ships for security reasons.<\/p>\n

Japanese shipping concerns<\/strong><\/p>\n

Worthy News has learned that the Eneos Endeavor’s voyage will make it only the second Japanese-owned supertanker to pass the chokepoint since the regional conflict escalated in late February.<\/p>\n

In late April, Idemitsu Maru became the first Japanese VLCC to make the crossing, although she did so while broadcasting her journey.<\/p>\n
