BERLIN (AP) \u2014 A humpback whale found dead this week on a Danish island has been identified as the animal abandoned two weeks ago in a spectacular and controversial rescue effort after repeatedly becoming stranded off Germany’s Baltic Sea coast, Danish officials said Saturday.<\/p>\n

The dead whale washed up Thursday near the small island of Anholt in Kattegat, the wide strait between Denmark and Sweden that connects the Baltic Sea to the North Sea. The spot is south of where the whales, nicknamed “Timmy” and “Hope”, were released on May 2 after being transported to the North Sea in a special barge.<\/p>\n
