Glorify your Son, that your Son glorify you. For you have given him authority over all people, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.”
John 17:1-3

eternal glory

We can be very good at glorifying. To glorify a thing or person means to give it great importance; Elevating it above other things; To praise it as one of the greatest things. We glorify wealth and the things and experiences it can buy. We hold politicians and entertainers in high regard until they live up to our expectations.

Our struggle is not that we do not know how to glorify. This is because we glorify those things whose glory is fading. Their greatness soon wears off, and we are left looking for the next great thing. When we meet Jesus in His words, we receive an eternal glory, a greatness that never fades away.

Today’s Bible verse is a prayer that Jesus prayed the night before his crucifixion. He prays that God the Father may be glorified, that God’s greatness may be revealed in what Jesus was about to do. He prays that he, God the Son, may also be glorified. Jesus did not seek glory in the worldly sense, such as becoming king on earth or achieving fame and fortune. Jesus was not put on a pedestal to be glorified; He was crucified. How can there be greatness and glory in suffering and dying on the cross?

Jesus’ death on the cross accomplished the greatest thing ever – the forgiveness of our sins, all the times we glorified the wrong things. This great and glorious thing is accomplished by the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. It is living proof that eternal life is ours, as promised by Jesus. We do not get this glory by our hard work. Jesus did it all. This glorious forgiveness and eternal life is ours through knowing Jesus by faith. We can lay aside all the things we have glorified and put all our hope in Jesus and His glory, which never fades away.

Prayer:

O Lord, let all the glory of this world fade away, and fix my faith in Your eternal glory, the glory of forgiveness of sins and eternal life. Amen.

Daily devotionals brought to you by WELS.

This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivative Works 3.0 United States License.

All scripture quotations, unless otherwise indicated, are from the Holy Bible, New International Version®, NIV®.
