He said that while pulmonary rehabilitation in adults is well established, less is known about how children may benefit.

The bottom line is that pediatric PR significantly improves the way children function and feel, with increases in exercise capacity, strength, and quality of life – even when conventional lung function testing does not change.

Toros Vousianis, first author of the study and medical student, College of Medicine, University of Cincinnati

Pulmonary rehabilitation is a common part of treatment for adults with respiratory problems, especially in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, but pediatric programs are rare. Challenges include the lack of standardized protocols and the need for more individualized exercise programs tailored to each patient’s age, behavior, and functional ability.

For the study, researchers tracked the outcomes of 51 children who were enrolled in a pediatric PR program and completed at least five sessions.

Participants showed significant improvements in exercise capacity and also reported significant improvements in quality of life. In particular, spirometry, a key measure of lung function, remained stable but did not improve, Mr. Vousianis said.

They added, “This highlights that meaningful clinical improvements extend beyond spirometry and supports PR as an important component of the care of children with chronic respiratory disease.”

They said patient and caregiver satisfaction with the program was high, supporting its acceptability and feasibility.

“A main goal of our program is to increase patients’ confidence in self-management of their disease and to promote physical activity outside the medical facility,” he said. “We’re always thrilled to hear when our former participants continue to implement their own exercise programs even after their PR sessions have ended.”

Team members plan to continue their research, including studies examining the impact of pediatric PR on other outcomes, the stability of PR benefits over time, and the optimal timing of PR among children with chronic respiratory diseases.

Source:

American Thoracic Society

New research presented at the 2026 ATS International Conference shows that pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) significantly improves functioning and quality of life in children with chronic respiratory conditions, whether or not lung function improves.
