HAVANA \u2013 Cuba’s power grid collapsed on Saturday, leaving the country without electricity for the third time in March, as the communist government grapples with deteriorating infrastructure and a US-imposed oil blockade.<\/p>\n

The Cuban Electric Union, which reports to the Ministry of Energy and Mines, initially announced a complete blackout across the entire island without specifying the cause of the outage.<\/p>\n

The union later said the blackout was caused by the unexpected failure of a generating unit at the Nuevitas thermoelectric plant in Camag\u00fcey province.<\/p>\n

“From that moment on, a cascading effect occurred in the machines that were online,” said a report from the Ministry of Energy and Mines, which activated “micro-islands” of generating units to provide power to vital centers, hospitals and water systems.<\/p>\n
