More than 11 tonnes of equipment has already been shipped to Bunia to support the response.<\/p>\n<p>WHO reflects on experience gained during 2018-2020 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/health-topics\/ebola\">Ebola<\/a> The outbreak in the same region \u2013 which was controlled despite the same security context \u2013 was a major asset. Dr. Belizaire recalls, &#8220;This is not the first time (&#8230;) There have been outbreaks in this area before and they have been controlled.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Challenges of rare strain, no vaccine<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Unlike the Zaire strain, which occurs more frequently, is more virulent, and causes more regular epidemics, the Bundibugyo strain is less understood and currently has no licensed vaccine or specific treatment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>We have to find the right formula to explain to the community that the vaccine you got in 2018, 2020 only protects you from this (Zaire) strain.<\/strong>. And now, you are not safe from it,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n<p>Based on his extensive field experience responding to Ebola outbreaks across Africa, Dr. Belizaire noted that discussions have already begun within the WHO Research and Development Program to accelerate potential therapy development. <\/p>\n<p>Research efforts have previously focused on the Zaire strain, which is responsible for the most frequent Ebola outbreaks and for which vaccines and therapeutics are now available.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>self defense<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>WHO says several simple measures should be adopted at the community level to limit the risk of transmission: Avoid any contact with the bodily fluids of a sick or dead person, and strictly enforce hygiene measures, especially regular hand washing.<\/p>\n<p>The health agency also stresses the importance of immediately reporting any suspected case and consulting a health center without delay if symptoms suddenly appear, including &#8220;high fever, extreme fatigue, muscle pain,&#8221; as well as vomiting or diarrhea.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Belizaire also emphasizes the importance of allowing health teams to conduct contact tracing in communities as soon as a suspected case is reported, as well as the need to protect health workers. <\/p>\n<p>People who are sick also need to be protected from feeling stigmatized.
