After dozens of conversations with homeowners, it’s become clear that price is only part of the story.

For many people, purchasing a battery turns from a mere thought into a serious necessity after many frustrating moments. Long power outages, skyrocketing energy bills, or a new solar installation can make home batteries feel like the obvious next step.

Also: Switch to plug-in solar? My advice after testing DIY energy technology at home

However, the path from idea to purchase is not clear. There is a lot of hesitation and fear in making the wrong choice. Homeowners are trying to understand how a battery fits into the rest of their home plans, whether it should come before or after other upgrades, and whether the investment really makes sense for their lives.

What comes first?

People who are considering investing in home energy technology often find themselves in a chicken and egg situation, unsure where to start. Jessica, a homeowner from Kentucky, got stuck at exactly that point.

“I’m interested in backup power, but I’m still not clear on the right order of operations. I might need a new roof at some point, and I might want solar power, and maybe an electric vehicle (EV) on the road,” she said. “I’m not sure what should come first or what makes the most sense to do together.”

Braulio Escobar, business development manager at Ecoflow, explained that there is no one correct sequence, but there is a better way to complete the journey.

Also: I’ve tested dozens of power stations — here’s how I’m preparing for summer blackouts

One way to think about it is to start with the end goal in mind. Imagine the perfect setup you want in the next five or 10 years and work backwards.

Research by independent firm Habitintelligence shows that 77% of homeowners are in an active technology cycle, meaning they have recently made a large home technology investment or are planning to soon. What you prioritize first depends on what you’re trying to achieve and what your home really needs right now to support the future vision.

“Think about what is the core infrastructure that will be built for the future. That’s probably the most important first step,” Escobar said. “If you’re considering rooftop solar, it may be wise to get a new roof first.”

I can move on soon. Do batteries still make sense?

Home batteries are usually not purchased immediately. It’s natural to wonder if there’s any point if you can’t stay in your current home forever. Susan, a homeowner in Texas, felt the same hesitation.

“Cost certainly matters,” Susan said, “but the big question for us is whether this house is really our long-term home. If we’re making a big investment in solar power and batteries, I want to be sure that we’ll be here for a long time, so that it really makes sense.”

Escobar put his advice into perspective by comparing it to a heating and air conditioning (HVAC) system. He explained that you don’t take the HVAC system with you when you move a house, so you can treat a grid-tied home battery the same way. But leaving it behind isn’t necessarily a loss.

Also: Considering home batteries? These 3 factors can help you decide

according to habitual research73% of homeowners who installed a battery believe their home energy setup has increased the value of their home, with most saying it has increased “substantially.”

“Even if you leave the system behind, you’re creating value for that house,” Escobar said. “Energy costs are rising, and grid reliability is a growing concern in many areas. In some markets, homes with these systems already in place command a premium.”

<picture class="c-cmsImage" style="aspect-ratio:1280/720;"> </picture>

wisdom of habit

Portable home batteries are an alternative option worth knowing about. Unlike a grid-tied system, you can roll the portable battery to the next house. This is a solid option for those who want the benefit of backup power without the long-term commitment associated with a home you can’t live in.

What else do I need to know?

Getting a home battery estimate will make the decision easier, but for many people, it is the opposite. Cycle life, round-trip efficiency, and depth of discharge are all important terms. But they don’t mean much to a person who just wants to know whether their refrigerator and air conditioner will stay on during a power outage. This resonated with Drew, Colorado.

Drew said, “I thought when these guys came in for these projections and started talking in all the language… it’s like going to a doctor. You don’t understand half of what they say.”

Before any speculation, Escobar said there is one number worth knowing.

Also: The best home batteries and backup systems of 2026: Expert tested for emergencies and more

“You need to have information about how much energy you are using on a monthly basis,” he said. “This will give you an idea of how much solar power and battery power you will need.”

You can review past energy bills to understand how your monthly usage is. That step only takes you forward. HabitatIntelligence found that 44% of homeowners They have no idea how much energy they use every month. Knowing these details makes it harder for anyone to oversell you on something you don’t really need.

When it comes to choosing which installer to work with, Escobar recommends paying attention to how they handle your concerns.

“If someone is just pressuring and making you say yes to everything, you can start to feel like it seems too good to be true,” she said. “A trustworthy installer will tell you what the system cannot do.”

how to proceed

The questions Jessica, Suzanne and Drew grapple with are the same questions that many other homeowners face during the process. There’s no single right answer for every situation, but once you know what you’re actually trying to solve the picture becomes clearer.

Forthcoming research from HabitatIntelligence shows that flexibility, economics and autonomy are the three top motivations behind why homeowners invest in home battery systems, but they don’t show up equally in every home. Asking yourself some simple questions can help point you in the right direction, like:

How often do you experience a power cut that is really disruptive to your home?

How much importance will you give to your neighbors when they don’t have power?

Are you on an electric rate plan with your utility that charges you more for electricity during times of peak demand?

Do you have solar power and want to store your excess energy at home for reasons other than saving money? (Such as a desire to reduce pressure on the system or reduce household grid consumption.)

Knowing your motivations and risk tolerance, as well as attainable figures such as your monthly energy consumption, will help to clarify how batteries might fit into your home energy future and help a qualified installer more effectively advise you on how to get there.

Faith Foushi contributed to this article.

Alvarez/E+ via Getty Follow ZDNET: Add us as a favorite source On Google.
