US launches AI initiative to detect fraud in health programs<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\nThe move comes after the Trump administration in March launched a national anti-fraud task force, led by Vice President J.D. Vance, aimed at cracking down on healthcare scams.<\/p>\n
The administration said earlier this month it would block new home health care and hospice providers from enrolling in Medicare for at least the next six months, citing concerns about fraudulent practices.<\/p>\n
The US HHS agency said it would work closely with states and grant recipients to address the audit findings and strengthen internal controls and could take measures such as temporarily pausing payments, cutting grants entirely, or withholding future funds from recipients who fail to resolve issues.<\/p>\n
Under federal law, non-federal entities, including states, local governments, nonprofits, and institutions of higher education, that spend at least $1 million annually in federal funds are subject to audit requirements.<\/p>\n
The decision was made after HHS assessed that hundreds of grant recipients had not submitted their required audits, some of which were more than two years late.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
