Only two previous outbreaks of this strain have been recorded \u2013 in Uganda in 2007 and in the DRC in 2012.<\/p>\n<h2>Conflict complicates response<\/h2>\n<p>The outbreak is spreading in Ituri and North Kivu provinces, areas long affected by armed violence and humanitarian crisis.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>In both provinces, approximately four million people are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance, two million are displaced and ten million are facing severe hunger.<\/strong>Tedros said.<\/p>\n<p>Fighting has intensified in recent months, displacing more than 100,000 people and disrupting health operations.<\/p>\n<h2>Emergency $60 million allocated<\/h2>\n<p>Also on Friday, UN emergency relief coordinator Tom Fletcher announced an allocation of up to $60 million from the organization <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cerf.un.org\/\">Central Emergency Response Fund<\/a> To support the response in the DRC and neighboring countries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThese are difficult operating environments for lifesaving operations,\u201d Mr Fletcher said. \u201cWe face conflict and high population movement.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He stressed the importance of ensuring access to frontline responders, including in areas controlled by armed groups. \u201cIt is important that there is no disruption,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"context-un_news_full_width_credit_caption type-entermedia_image media figure media--type-entermedia-image media--view-mode-un-news-full-width-credit-caption\"><figcaption class=\"media__caption figure-caption\">\n                  <span class=\"author\">\u00a9 MONUSCO\/Abel Kavanagh<\/span><br \/>\n                          <span class=\"caption\">Ituri province (pictured) in eastern DR Congo is one of the worst affected areas.<\/span><br \/>\n              <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Accused of &#8216;fabricating&#8217; Ebola<\/h2>\n<p>Aid agencies stressed that misinformation and mistrust could undermine efforts to contain the outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriela Arenas of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) said many communities were still in shock from the previous Ebola epidemic.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>They remember the fear. He remembers the rumors spreading in the villages,<\/strong>\u201cThey remember neighbors disappearing into treatment centres,\u201d he told reporters in Geneva from Nairobi.<\/p>\n<p>While many residents are seeking information and treatment, others still believe &#8220;Ebola is a fabrication,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>IFRC said Red Cross volunteers were already going door-to-door in affected areas to share information and support safe and dignified burials.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>During an Ebola outbreak, trust and community acceptance could mean the difference between prevention and widespread transmission,<\/strong>Ms. Arenas said.<\/p>\n<h2>Women are most at risk<\/h2>\n<p>Agencies warn that the social dynamics that fuel transmission could disproportionately affect women, as happened in previous Ebola outbreaks.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>First of all, women are more likely to get infected<\/strong>Sophia Coltorp said, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\">un women<\/a>Head of Humanitarian Action.<\/p>\n<p>During the 2018\u20132019 Ebola outbreak in the DRC, nearly two-thirds of reported cases were women and girls.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThis is because Ebola transmission follows social realities,\u201d Ms Coltorp said. \u201cThis virus spreads through caregiving, domestic labour, frontline health work and burial practices.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>She said pregnant women face particular risks, while quarantine could increase gender-based violence.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"context-un_news_full_width_credit_caption type-entermedia_image media figure media--type-entermedia-image media--view-mode-un-news-full-width-credit-caption\"><figcaption class=\"media__caption figure-caption\">\n                  <span class=\"author\">\u00a9 who<\/span><br \/>\n                          <span class=\"caption\">A WHO staffer at the agency&#8217;s response center in Nairobi prepares emergency supplies for air transport to areas affected by the Ebola outbreak in DR Congo.<\/span><br \/>\n              <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Prevention efforts have intensified<\/h2>\n<p><strong>WHO said it has deployed 22 international staff to the region and released $3.9 million from its contingency fund<\/strong>While a continental incident management team was being established with the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.<\/p>\n<p>The agency and its partners are also accelerating work on experimental vaccines and therapeutics for the Bundibugyo strain.<\/p>\n<p>Tedros said WHO&#8217;s research advisory group had recommended prioritizing two monoclonal antibodies for clinical trials, along with testing the antiviral drug obeldesivir for high-risk contacts.<\/p>\n<p>He also underlined the importance of restoring confidence. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>Building trust in affected communities is critical to a successful response, and is one of our top priorities.<\/strong>&#8221; He said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>United Nations World Health Organization (UNHCO)Who) on Friday raised the national risk assessment for the DRC to &#8220;very high&#8221; \u2013 although the global risk remains &#8220;low&#8221;.
