On paper, this is the upgrade that regular travelers have been wanting for a long time. But some online reactions are debating whether this feature is worth the compromise.

The feature comes as a result of a partnership between Samsung and CLEAR, the identity verification company famous for its Airport Fast Lanes. Samsung says Galaxy owners with a valid US passport can now create a digital ID for use at more than 250 TSA checkpoints across the United States. It’s also quite simple to set up: Users open Samsung Wallet, tap Digital ID, and verify their passport through CLEAR. The reader claims that CLEAR representatives clearly lied to him, and assured him that CLEAR was a government program similar to TSA. Under the false impression that it was a government institution, the sender provided personal information and submitted for an iris scan to bypass a long security line.

After looking into the company, the sender realized that CLEAR is a private corporation. He demanded immediate deletion of his data. Although CLEAR claimed the data had been deleted, the sender continued to receive emails. He strongly suspects that the company has kept his biometric and personal information. Because of this experience, they completely distrust CLEAR’s data privacy practices (particularly regarding the mentioned Samsung partnership) and suspect that many other travelers are also misled into thinking it is a government program.

Get the latest news from Android Central, your trusted partner in the world of Android

TSA adoption may be inconsistent

<picture data-new-v2-image="true">
</picture>

(Image credit: Andrew Myrick/Android Central)

Some? reddit reactions were very diverse. In a post on the TSA subreddit, travelers questioned whether digital IDs are actually consistent in real-world airport scenarios. One user reported getting “0-3” when attempting to use digital identification at TSA checkpoints, blaming the failures on a mixture of technical difficulties and airport staff unfamiliarity with the system. Others said adoption still appears to be vague depending on the airport, TSA lanes, or whether agents are properly trained on digital ID support.

Privacy concerns also arose almost immediately. Others argued that storing passports, payment cards, boarding passes and personal credentials in one app creates a dangerous dependency on a single device. If you lose your phone, experience software issues, or your Samsung account gets locked out, your “Wallet” becomes a single point of failure. This concern is reminiscent of the reactions seen when Apple or Google move into digital identity systems.

Samsung, for its part, is taking a tough stance on security messaging. The company says passport information is encrypted directly on the device via Samsung Knox, while CLEAR handles identity verification on the backend. Access is enabled via fingerprint authentication or a secure PIN. Samsung also notes that this feature is only available for domestic US travel at this time, so you’ll still need your physical passport for international flights.

There are some warnings hidden in the marketing too. TSA reader machines must be compatible. Not all airport checkpoints are equipped with digital ID, and passengers may still be required to present physical documents depending on airport policy. Anyway, Samsung itself recommends keeping a backup physical ID.

Despite the skepticism, Samsung Wallet is clearly aiming to become much more than a payments app. Samsung wants to make Galaxy phones a complete identity hub for digital IDs, boarding passes, keys, and government credentials. Whether passengers fully trust that idea is a different story altogether.

Android Central’s Tech

The idea of walking through TSA with just your phone instead of lugging around a passport, boarding pass, wallet, and half your pockets sounds pretty useful, especially for frequent travelers already in Samsung’s ecosystem. That being said, the whole “your phone is now your identity” thing still feels like tech companies are charging for a future that no one has actually signed up for. Sure, digital passports look cute in the keynote presentation, but real life is messy. Phones break down, apps crash, TSA systems break down, and airport staff aren’t always on the same page. Add in some privacy concerns and the increasing pressure of storing every individual credential inside a device, and the whole thing starts to look like another giant “trust us” experiment from Big Tech.

Samsung’s latest wallet upgrade is getting a lot of attention online, but it appears not everyone is convinced yet that this is the future of travel.
