The US Congress continues to have strong support for Taiwan, even as it remains a focal point of relations with China, according to members of a delegation. IISS Shangri-La Dialogue<\/a> in Singapore.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is really strong bipartisan support for Taiwan and Taiwan’s security, and making sure we can make a lot of progress with respect to the island’s ability to defend itself,\u201d Senator Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., said at a media roundtable at the Dialogue.<\/p>\n

Taiwan, which claims the right to self-governance but is also claimed by China, has been in the focus for some time due to comments made by US President Donald Trump. Trump has mentioned a $14 billion arms sale to the island, which has been approved by Congress.conversation chip<\/a>“With China.<\/p>\n

At another media roundtable in the dialogue, the R.N.C. Representative Pat Harrigan said, “Our commitment to Taiwan \u2013 that’s not changing.” “If you look at the work we’ve done with Taiwan, there can be no claim that the United States is not there for the island.”<\/p>\n

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth did not mention Taiwan in his previous comments at the dialogue. However, Representative Michael Baumgartner, R-W.A. Underestimated the significance of the mistake.<\/p>\n

Hegseth “emphatically mentioned the status quo,” Baumgartner said. “I think that includes Taiwan.”<\/p>\n

D.N.Y. Representative Greg Meeks of the U.S. said the arms sale to Taiwan was “approved by Congress in a bipartisan manner.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
