The glorious God appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia before he lived in Haran. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-27112\" class=\"text Acts-7-3\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3 <\/sup>God said to him, &#8216;Leave your land and your relatives and come to the land that I will show you.&#8217;<sup style=\"font-size: 0.525em;line-height: normal;position: relative;vertical-align: text-top;top: auto;display: inline\"> (1)<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-EHV-27113\" class=\"text Acts-7-4\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4 <\/sup>\u201cThen he left the country of the Chaldeans and settled in Haran. After the death of his father, God transferred him from there to this country where you are now living.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-EHV-27114\" class=\"text Acts-7-5\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5 <\/sup>\u201cHe gave him no inheritance in this land, not even enough to set foot on it. But God promised to give it to him and his descendants as an inheritance<sup style=\"font-size: 0.525em;line-height: normal;position: relative;vertical-align: text-top;top: auto;display: inline\"> (2)<\/sup> After that,<sup style=\"font-size: 0.525em;line-height: normal;position: relative;vertical-align: text-top;top: auto;display: inline\"> (3)<\/sup> However Abraham still had no children. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-27115\" class=\"text Acts-7-6\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6 <\/sup>God revealed his descendants<sup style=\"font-size: 0.525em;line-height: normal;position: relative;vertical-align: text-top;top: auto;display: inline\"> (4)<\/sup> They will live like strangers in a foreign land, and will be enslaved and abused for four hundred years. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-27116\" class=\"text Acts-7-7\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7 <\/sup>God continued, &#8216;I will judge that nation that they will serve as slaves, and then they will go away and serve Me in this place.&#8217;<sup style=\"font-size: 0.525em;line-height: normal;position: relative;vertical-align: text-top;top: auto;display: inline\"> (5)<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-EHV-27117\" class=\"text Acts-7-8\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8 <\/sup>&#8220;Then he gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision. So Abraham became the father of Isaac, and he was circumcised on the eighth day. Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob became the father of twelve patriarchs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span id=\"en-EHV-27118\" class=\"text Acts-7-9\">Stefan defends himself<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"text Acts-7-9\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9 <\/sup>\u201cThe patriarchs were jealous and sold Joseph into Egypt, but God was with him. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-27119\" class=\"text Acts-7-10\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10 <\/sup>God saved him from all his troubles and granted him grace and wisdom before Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. And Pharaoh made him ruler over Egypt and his entire palace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-EHV-27120\" class=\"text Acts-7-11\"><sup class=\"versenum\">11 <\/sup>\u201cThere was a famine throughout Egypt and Canaan, causing great suffering, and our ancestors did not get food. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-27121\" class=\"text Acts-7-12\"><sup class=\"versenum\">12 <\/sup>But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent our ancestors to Egypt for the first time. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-27122\" class=\"text Acts-7-13\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13 <\/sup>On his second journey, Joseph told his brothers about himself, and Joseph&#8217;s family became known to Pharaoh. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-27123\" class=\"text Acts-7-14\"><sup class=\"versenum\">14 <\/sup>Then Joseph sent word and called his father Jacob and all his relatives, that is, seventy-five men in all. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-27124\" class=\"text Acts-7-15\"><sup class=\"versenum\">15 <\/sup>Jacob went to Egypt, and died there with our ancestors. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-27125\" class=\"text Acts-7-16\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16 <\/sup>Their bodies were brought back to Shechem and placed in a tomb that Abraham had purchased from the sons of Hamor in Shechem with a sum of silver.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-EHV-27126\" class=\"text Acts-7-17\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17 <\/sup>\u201cAs the time approached, God spoke about his promise<sup style=\"font-size: 0.525em;line-height: normal;position: relative;vertical-align: text-top;top: auto;display: inline\"> (6)<\/sup> The population of Egypt increased under Abraham. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-27127\" class=\"text Acts-7-18\"><sup class=\"versenum\">18 <\/sup>This continued until another king who knew nothing about Joseph became ruler of Egypt. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-27128\" class=\"text Acts-7-19\"><sup class=\"versenum\">19 <\/sup>He cunningly took advantage of our people, and he mistreated our fathers and forced them to get rid of their children so that they could not survive.<sup style=\"font-size: 0.525em;line-height: normal;position: relative;vertical-align: text-top;top: auto;display: inline\"> (7)<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span id=\"en-EHV-27129\" class=\"text Acts-7-20\">Stefan defends himself<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"text Acts-7-20\"><sup class=\"versenum\">20 <\/sup>&#8220;At that time, Moses was born, and God was gracious to him. He was cared for in his father&#8217;s house for three months. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-27130\" class=\"text Acts-7-21\"><sup class=\"versenum\">21 <\/sup>After he was put out,<sup style=\"font-size: 0.525em;line-height: normal;position: relative;vertical-align: text-top;top: auto;display: inline\"> (8)<\/sup> Pharaoh&#8217;s daughter took him in and raised him like her own son. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-27131\" class=\"text Acts-7-22\"><sup class=\"versenum\">22 <\/sup>Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was powerful in his words and actions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-EHV-27132\" class=\"text Acts-7-23\"><sup class=\"versenum\">23 <\/sup>\u201cBut when he was forty years old, it came to his mind to meet his brothers, the children of Israel. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-27133\" class=\"text Acts-7-24\"><sup class=\"versenum\">24 <\/sup>When he saw one of them being abused, he defended him and took revenge on the oppressed man by killing the Egyptian. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-27134\" class=\"text Acts-7-25\"><sup class=\"versenum\">25 <\/sup>He thought that his brothers would understand that God was delivering them with His own hand, but they did not. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-27135\" class=\"text Acts-7-26\"><sup class=\"versenum\">26 <\/sup>The next day, he came across two of them while they were fighting, and he tried to resolve them. He said, &#8216;Men, you are brothers. Why are you hurting each other?&#8217; <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-27136\" class=\"text Acts-7-27\"><sup class=\"versenum\">27 <\/sup>But the one who was harming his neighbor pushed him away, saying, &#8216;Who made you a ruler and judge over us? <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-27137\" class=\"text Acts-7-28\"><sup class=\"versenum\">28 <\/sup>Do you want to kill me like you killed the Egyptian yesterday?&#8217;<sup style=\"font-size: 0.525em;line-height: normal;position: relative;vertical-align: text-top;top: auto;display: inline\"> (9)<\/sup> <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-27138\" class=\"text Acts-7-29\"><sup class=\"versenum\">29 <\/sup>At this comment, Moses fled and lived in exile in the land of Midian, where he became the father of two sons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-EHV-27139\" class=\"text Acts-7-30\"><sup class=\"versenum\">30 <\/sup>\u201cAfter forty years had passed, an angel of the Lord<sup style=\"font-size: 0.525em;line-height: normal;position: relative;vertical-align: text-top;top: auto;display: inline\"> (10)<\/sup> He appeared in the flames of a burning bush in the forest of Mount Sinai. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-27140\" class=\"text Acts-7-31\"><sup class=\"versenum\">31 <\/sup>When Moses saw it, he was amazed at what he saw. As he went closer to see, the voice of the Lord said, <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-27141\" class=\"text Acts-7-32\"><sup class=\"versenum\">32 <\/sup>&#8216;I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of<sup style=\"font-size: 0.525em;line-height: normal;position: relative;vertical-align: text-top;top: auto;display: inline\"> (11)<\/sup> Jacob.<sup style=\"font-size: 0.525em;line-height: normal;position: relative;vertical-align: text-top;top: auto;display: inline\"> (12)<\/sup> Moses trembled and did not dare to look. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-27142\" class=\"text Acts-7-33\"><sup class=\"versenum\">33 <\/sup>Then the Lord said to him, Take off your shoes from off your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-27143\" class=\"text Acts-7-34\"><sup class=\"versenum\">34 <\/sup>I have seen the oppression of my people in Egypt, and have heard their groaning. I have come down to save them. Now come, I will send you to Egypt.&#8217;<sup style=\"font-size: 0.525em;line-height: normal;position: relative;vertical-align: text-top;top: auto;display: inline\"> (13)<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-EHV-27144\" class=\"text Acts-7-35\"><sup class=\"versenum\">35 <\/sup>\u201cThis is the same Moses whom they rejected, saying, &#8216;Who made you a ruler and a judge?&#8217; This is the one whom God sent to be the ruler and savior, with the help of the angel who appeared to him in the bush. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-27145\" class=\"text Acts-7-36\"><sup class=\"versenum\">36 <\/sup>This is the same one who worked wonders and signs in Egypt, at the Red Sea and in the wilderness for forty years, and brought the people out. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-27146\" class=\"text Acts-7-37\"><sup class=\"versenum\">37 <\/sup>This is the same Moses who said to the people of Israel, O God<sup style=\"font-size: 0.525em;line-height: normal;position: relative;vertical-align: text-top;top: auto;display: inline\"> (14)<\/sup> I will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers.&#8217;<sup style=\"font-size: 0.525em;line-height: normal;position: relative;vertical-align: text-top;top: auto;display: inline\"> (15)<\/sup> <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-27147\" class=\"text Acts-7-38\"><sup class=\"versenum\">38 <\/sup>This is the same one who was in the meeting with the angel in the wilderness who spoke to him and to our fathers on Mount Sinai. They&#8217;ve got vibrant messages to give us, <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-27148\" class=\"text Acts-7-39\"><sup class=\"versenum\">39 <\/sup>But our ancestors refused to obey his orders. Instead they pushed him away and turned back to Egypt in their hearts. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-27149\" class=\"text Acts-7-40\"><sup class=\"versenum\">40 <\/sup>They said to Aaron, &#8216;Make us gods who will go before us.
