A crowd of people climbed on top of a Metro bus and stopped it from moving during a chaotic road takeover in the Harbor Gateway area over the weekend.<\/p>\n

At 11:45 p.m. Saturday, the Los Angeles Police Department responded to multiple calls of a street takeover involving people running over a bus at the intersection of Alondra Boulevard and Figueroa Street, according to a department spokesperson. Officers dispersed the crowd, impounded two cars and issued seven parking citations.<\/p>\n

The takeover was one of three similar incidents to which the LAPD responded in less than 24 hours this weekend. <\/p>\n

Video recording captured by news gathering organization OnScene.TV shows more than a dozen people standing over a metro bus, which is unable to move as a crowd of more than a hundred people has blocked the intersection. People can be seen running on the roof of the bus and sitting on the front bumper, while the driver looks ahead sadly through the graffiti-covered interior windows. <\/p>\n

According to a Metro spokesperson, the bus was carrying Metro maintenance personnel back to their bus division when it got stuck. There was no member of the public in it. <\/p>\n

A spokesperson for her office said in a statement to The Times on Monday, “Mayor Bass has zero tolerance for this crime, especially when it messes with the bus that takes hard-working Angelenos home after a long day.” \u201cWe have increased visibility and enforcement \u2013 \u200b\u200bthis will continue.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, the mayor announced that the LAPD was increasing resources to prevent and respond to a street occupation in Downtown LA following an incident where a dispute over a takeover spilled over into an upscale apartment complex. Apartment lobby windows were broken during the fighting and at least one person was sent to the hospital. <\/p>\n

During the road takeover in the Harbor Gateway area, people could be seen getting out of cars and spinning donuts at the intersection amid clouds of smoke from burning rubber. Onlookers filmed the scene on their phones, and some set off fireworks at the intersection and nearby streets. <\/p>\n

The LAPD dispersed the crowd and allowed the Metro bus and its occupants to move away from the area. Officers then seized two vehicles and towed them from the scene.<\/p>\n

But the night did not end here.<\/p>\n

At 2:50 a.m. Monday, officers responded to multiple calls for a street takeover about six miles away at the intersection of Western Avenue and Century Boulevard in South L.A., according to a department spokesperson. Officers cleared the area by around 3:30 a.m. and seized a vehicle.<\/p>\n

OnScene.TV also captured video of the Third Street takeover, which took place in South LA on Sunday evening around 7:35 p.m. The recording shows dozens of cars as well as motorcycles driving down Broadway from Adams Boulevard to Washington Boulevard and people playing music. <\/p>\n

Street takeovers exploded in popularity during the pandemic as people took advantage of quiet streets to hold mass gatherings and perform car stunts.
