According to research from , the US currently hosts about 3,960 data centers, which is more than the next 14 countries combined. visual capitalist. There is at least one data center in every US state and nearly 500 in Northern Virginia alone. Hyperscalers and AI giants including Amazon, Meta, Google and Microsoft alone account for the majority of these centres, whose size has gone from the standard 50 acres to the gigawatt scale. according to a Hines According to research, approximately 40,000 acres of operational land is required to support the projected data center growth by 2030. This is not just any land, but land with immediate access to high-voltage transmission lines. By 2028, these centers may require 32 billion gallons of water annually forbes. This is enough to support the indoor water use of approximately 360,000 households. Furthermore, a decline in quality of life has been reported in areas where data centers are already present. In December 2025, residents of Memphis told TIME how they have been struggling for clean air since Elon Musk’s AI company began piling up pollution. State Representative Justin Pearson said, “They put our lungs and our air up for auction and sold us to the richest man in the world.” By turning down the mega-million offer, mother-daughter are not only protecting their home, but they’re also issuing a stark warning about the damage that happens when people trade their clay for silicone. While developers find “empty” acreage suitable for the cloud, these farmers see a life-sustaining resource that has weathered every storm since the 1930s.

Lately, the winds of Mason County in Kentucky have been carrying something other than the smell of fresh crops.
