For decades, the gold standard for getting a problem fixed was simple: You pick up the phone, call customer service, and talk to a person. Today, that hope is being eroded by a massive push toward digital identity verification and automated systems designed to cut costs.

automated customer service web

At most, you simply call a number to get to the machine. While we have been told that AI will make it better, the reality is not there yet. Sometimes you just need someone who understands the nuances. We’ve all been there – yelling “agent” or “representative” into the receiver, hoping the system will soften up. Companies like Amazon and Meta are also notorious for hiding their straight lines.

I’ve personally had to resort to “billing threats” or claims that a technical glitch is actually a billing issue that can only be transferred to a human being. Then there are web forms where you send a message into the void and pray for a response a few days later.

Why is the government leading the change?

When it comes to financial matters, the human touch isn’t just a priority; It is a necessity. I recently tried to assist a retiree in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM). Their phone system literally told me to use the website, which is the same thing I had already tried!

The shift toward digital identity verification is partly due to the shrinking workforce. Many government agencies have lost their employees due to retirement or forced resignation. A family member told me that at the IRS, the “level of service” – or the probability of reaching a human – once fell as low as 5%. With April 15th coming up, this is a scary statistic if you have a math error or any related problem that requires a quick verbal solution.

Why you need ID.me sooner than you think?

Although you can do many things yourself, like requesting transcripts or 1099-R forms, the gateway has changed. Government sites now rely on digital identity verification services such as log.gov or, more commonly, ID.me.

ID.me is a private company, not a government agency. Because their verification process can sometimes include additional steps like uploading documents or making a video call, you should set up an account for each adult in your household now. Don’t wait until you reach an emergency situation. If you run into trouble, remember to contact ID.me support directly at help.id.me instead of the agency you’re trying to reach.

becoming your own agent

We live in an era where organizations force you to become their customer service agent. Just as we have become factory workers these days who make our own tables and toys, we are now technicians managing our own digital identity verification. Setting up your accounts early is the only way to ensure you don’t get left behind when machines stop responding.

Like this:

Like It’s loading…

Photo courtesy of Pexels – Markus Spiske The vanishing human in customer service There’s a trend you’ve probably experienced recently, but you may not fully appreciate the forces at play.
