kills 6,000 soldiers in 4 days in drone &#8216;kill zone&#8217;<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Geraldine Carney, ANSES expertise coordinator, said: \u201cIf current risk levels are maintained and no action is taken, long-term adverse effects on the population are likely to be greater. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Limit consumption of sweet and salty wheat products, such as breakfast cereals, cakes, biscuits.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Researchers studied various potential sources of cadmium exposure, including food, water, air, dust, soil, cosmetics, and smoking. <\/p>\n<p>They found that in the non-smoking population, up to 98 percent of the risk was due to diet. <\/p>\n<p>Not surprisingly, tobacco was the second major source of this chemical. <\/p>\n<p>In French cuisine, some of the major sources of cadmium are breads, pastries and cakes, as well as breakfast cereals, pasta, rice and potatoes. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;France&#8217;s levels are three or four times higher than other countries like Belgium, England and Italy,&#8221; Carney said. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.franceinfo.fr\/sante\/alimentation\/les-francais-sont-de-plus-en-plus-contamines-par-le-cadmium-un-metal-cancerogene-present-dans-les-sols-et-l-alimentation_7891091.html\" data-nyp-affiliate=\"true\">franceinfo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>About half the French population is thought to have been exposed to dangerous levels of the carcinogenic metal.  <\/p>\n<div class=\"article-boxout\">\n<p><h3 class=\"article-boxout__headline\">What is Cadmium?<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-boxout__content theme__background-color-rgba-20\">\n<div>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cadmium is a naturally occurring heavy metal found in the Earth&#8217;s crust, often released into the environment through industrial processes and fertilizers.<\/li>\n<li>It can be absorbed by crops grown in contaminated soil. <\/li>\n<li>Main ingredients like wheat, which is used to make everyday foods like baguette and croissants, can absorb cadmium.<\/li>\n<li>Long-term exposure to high levels of cadmium can be harmful. <\/li>\n<li>However, for most people, a balanced diet ensures that cadmium intake remains within safe limits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Terming the situation &#8220;alarming&#8221;, ANSES has urged the French government to significantly reduce the maximum cadmium levels allowed in phosphate fertilizers. <\/p>\n<p>The current permitted level in France is 90mg\/kg. <\/p>\n<p>This is very different from other European countries which have limits below 60 mg\/kg. <\/p>\n<p>To combat the increased risk, the public has been urged to include more legumes \u2013 such as chickpeas and lentils \u2013 in their diets.<\/p>\n<p>It is also recommended that people eat a variety of foods sourced from different regions.<\/p>\n<p>This will help in avoiding repeated exposure to harmful substances.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_38633891\" class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-caption alignnone aligncenter\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span>Food safety experts have called on the government to reduce the maximum levels of cadmium allowed<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Credit: Getty<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>France has been told to cut down on national delicacies such as croissants and baguettes due to a higher risk of developing cancer.
