Ron DeSantis — believe they can gain five more seats with a rare mid-decade redrawing of district lines.

Some Florida officials are now warning strongly that it could have the opposite effect.

“I think the legislature needs to be very mindful of the fact that if they get too aggressive … you could put current members at risk,” the GOP representative said. Greg Stubbe Said. Some seats that Republicans previously won by eight or nine points, he said, may instead have GOP gains of just four or five points — which would put them within reach of Democrats in a wave election.

DeSantis has called a special session of the state Legislature in April to advance the new lines, citing last year’s state Supreme Court decision and a possible U.S. Supreme Court decision. No official maps have been drawn up yet or there is no indication that lawmakers have started working on them.

Republican concerns are heightened after Democrats’ surprise victory in special elections on Tuesday, which includes the Palm Beach County district that includes the Mar-a-Largo resort where Trump lives and votes.

While many in the GOP have shrugged off Democratic gains there and in other states as anomalies, private doubts are growing among incumbents whose seats could be at greater risk due to redistricting.

“We keep saying these are kind of one-sided things that didn’t go our way,” said a Florida House Republican, speaking on condition of anonymity to speak candidly. “But I don’t see any unilateral cases going our way.”

The member added, “To talk as aggressively as we have heard, there is no way to get there without diluting some districts.”

House Democrats are hoping to take advantage of this opportunity. minority leader Hakeem Jeffries A warning was immediately sent out Tuesday night that redistricting could be counterproductive.

“If DeSantis tries to upset the Florida congressional map we will crush House Republicans in November,” Jeffries said. xin a post on","Add":{"Target": :"New","Property":(),"url": :"https://x.com/hakeemjeffries/status/2036626657608364473","_Identification": :"0000019d-2777-d1d2-a5bd-3ff7fab90001","_Type": :"33ac701a-72c1-316a-a3a5-13918cf384df"},"_Identification": :"0000019d-2777-d1d2-a5bd-3ff7fab90002","_Type": :"02ec1f82-5e56-3b8c-af6e-6fc7c8772266"}”>in a post on x.

Others openly object to redistribution on high-ideological grounds. John Rutherford, adding that South Florida could bear the brunt of any changes. “But if they think they can get two seats or something, then do that.”

Any significant redistricting in Florida would likely focus on changing districts that were drawn based on racial considerations, as DeSantis has cited court decisions. While most of the attention is on seats held by Democrats, Republicans believe this could lead to a change in a Miami-area district represented by a GOP representative. Mario Diaz-Balart.

Some incumbents are also worried that redistricting — which is still weeks away — is hindering their re-election campaigns as the midterms approach.

“Why would you knock on doors if you don’t know whether they’ll be in your district or not?” Stubbe said.

The hand-wringing over Florida comes as Trump’s months-long redistricting effort continues to fizzle out in the House. Republicans began with a surprise effort to draw new maps in Texas, but Democrats countered this with an effort to draw California’s lines in their favor.

After months of wrangling in about a dozen states, the entire effort appears to be about to collapse — after some Republicans tried to warn party leaders the massive effort could backfire.

A group of Florida House Republicans privately discussed their concerns about the results of another redistricting effort in their state, several Republicans confirmed — especially amid growing concern that Hispanic voters could turn away from the GOP.

House GOP leaders mostly dismissed Florida special elections in public comments Wednesday, arguing that low-turnout, off-cycle races should not be considered midterm bellwethers. But some suggested some lessons could be learned from Tuesday’s results.

“Surely you’ll look at them and see if there are things we can learn and improve when the big election comes?” majority leader in the house steve scalise Told reporters on Wednesday. “And obviously, November is the election we’re focused on.”

The top leader of the House GOP campaign arm, Rep. richard hudson More of North Carolina brian jack In Georgia, both adjourned the state legislature on redistricting in Florida on Wednesday.

NRCC Chairman Hudson said Florida’s growing population means redistricting “makes sense”, but added he was more concerned about turnout and other factors.

Jack, the group’s vice president for recruiting, similarly spoke about the candidates Republicans will field in Florida and elsewhere.
