Hurricane season isn’t over yet, as an early spring system headed toward California is expected to bring snow to the Sierra and light rain to Los Angeles next week.<\/p>\n
According to the National Weather Service, two waves of precipitation are headed toward the Tahoe area, with the first wave beginning Monday through Tuesday evening. The Sierras could reach up to two inches closer to the mammoth. <\/p>\n
A second, stronger system is expected to hit Alaska Wednesday through Thursday, with up to a foot of snowfall predicted on the highest peaks in the Tahoe Basin and about 2 to 5 inches outside the highest peaks, according to the weather service. Lake Tahoe could see up to 3 inches of snowfall.<\/p>\n
“With an active winter, there will be snow even in May,” said Gigi Giralte, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Reno. “It’s not necessarily out of the ordinary. It’s absolutely out of the ordinary for the winter we’ve been in because the month of March in our area has been very dry and at the same time it’s been warm.” <\/p>\n
Temperatures for Sierra communities on Friday are expected to warm from the mid 60s to low 70s, with winds gusting up to 25 mph, according to the weather service. On Saturday, temperatures in South Lake Tahoe could reach 66 degrees and are expected to get even hotter by Sunday. <\/p>\n
Temperatures are expected to drop to near normal temperatures during the snowfall by the end of March, according to the weather service. The second storm may also bring some wind related impacts. Snow levels could drop below 7,000 feet and as high as 5,000 feet by early Thursday. <\/p>\n
