Thousands of people have gathered to honor a mother of two who was killed last week.<\/p>\n
Amy Doherty, 28, was found seriously injured at a property dairy<\/strong> He died last Saturday and later in hospital.<\/p>\n Hundreds of people could be seen gathering at the city’s Guildhall on Friday evening, carrying flowers and purple balloons.<\/p>\n In an emotional address to the crowd, Amy’s mother Sharon said her daughter was “brutally taken from us and her children”.<\/p>\n “I don’t want the murders of Amy and the other 29 women to be in vain,” she said, referring to other victims killed in Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n “We just want justice for Amy.”<\/p>\n <\/span> Balloons were then released into the sky in honor of Ms Doherty and other women killed in Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n Earlier in the day Connor McNamee, 30, appeared in court charged with Ms Doherty’s murder.<\/p>\n He was also charged with possession of an offensive weapon, a kitchen knife, and possession of a Class A controlled drug, cocaine.<\/p>\n McNamee appeared at Londonderry Magistrates Court via videolink.<\/p>\n He was remanded to custody and will appear in court on April 23.<\/p>\n Ms Doherty’s funeral was held on Thursday, describing her as a “dedicated” care worker and someone with a “magnetic personality”.<\/p>\n Her death and other high-profile cases have prompted discussion over the safety of women and girls in Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n Read more from Sky News: The issue of violence against women and girls has dominated political discussions this week following the deaths of two women this month and the conviction of Stephen McCullagh for the murder of his pregnant partner.
