But that&#8217;s the only way it can be changed, and hopefully we&#8217;ll win the appeal.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Trump&#8217;s executive order also threatens to withhold federal funds from states that do not comply and directs the attorney general to investigate anyone who improperly distributes mail-in ballots.<\/p>\n<p>It is the latest escalation of Trump&#8217;s long-standing complaints about the way Americans vote as he pressures Congress to pass the GOP-backed Save America Act, which has cleared the House but faces an uphill battle in the Senate. He has falsely claimed on several occasions that voting by mail is uniquely vulnerable to voter fraud, despite the fact that he cast his ballot by that method in last week&#8217;s Florida election.<\/p>\n<p>Republican states have advanced their plans to add citizenship requirements to voting laws, but these measures have also increasingly drawn legal challenges.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats argued that the executive order violates the First, Fourth, Fifth, and Tenth Amendments and &#8220;dramatically exceeds their extremely limited constitutional and statutory authority when it comes to regulating elections.&#8221; The lawsuit also argues that the Postal Service is being asked to go beyond its domain in creating lists of eligible absentee voters.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic attorneys general are preparing for the possibility of the Trump administration meddling in this fall&#8217;s midterm elections, crowding out hotel conference rooms and pushing back with war-gaming tactics over Zoom.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Democratic Party leaders filed a lawsuit Wednesday to block President Donald Trump&#8217;s effort to limit voting by mail ahead of the midterm elections.
