The second man stayed behind to try to put out the fire, then quickly came out and collapsed, the fire department said. Despite attempts by a neighbor to revive the man, he was pronounced dead after emergency crews took him to a local hospital.

The San Jose Fire Department did not immediately release the identity of the victim.

The department wrote that smoke from lithium-ion batteries becomes thick and toxic, and potentially lethal “within seconds” to such an extent that “even trained firefighters do not enter a smoke-filled environment without proper protective gear and self-contained breathing apparatus.”

Lithium-ion batteries have become extremely common amid the proliferation of chargeable electronics, including smartphones, laptops, headphones, e-cigarettes, vacuums, e-bikes, and almost countless other devices.

The chemicals inside batteries can release flammable gases when exposed to high temperatures or physical damage US Fire AdministrationWhich potentially leads to a process known as thermal runaway, in which the battery ignites through a self-sustaining chemical reaction that is impossible to stop until it runs out on its own.

Signs of battery failure include swelling, hissing, popping, unusual odor, and excessive heat. New York Division of Homeland Security Battery Consumer Guide. If the battery burns out, the best thing to do is to leave immediately and call 9-1-1.

People are advised not to leave devices charging or while sleeping and to unplug them once they are fully charged. Small devices like phones and headphones should be charged in bed or on the couch, and larger devices like e-bikes should not be charged near the front door, because if they burn out, fire escapes may be blocked.

One person died in an apartment fire caused by a defective e-bike battery in San Jose last week, authorities said.
