One person died in an apartment fire caused by a defective e-bike battery in San Jose last week, authorities said. <\/p>\n

According to the San Jose Fire Department, two people were in the apartment around 8:30 a.m. Friday when an e-bike battery started sparking and releasing smoke, causing a fire. wrote in a Facebook post<\/a>. <\/p>\n

One of the men came out of the apartment. The second man stayed behind to try to put out the fire, then quickly came out and collapsed, the fire department said. Despite attempts by a neighbor to revive the man, he was pronounced dead after emergency crews took him to a local hospital. <\/p>\n

The San Jose Fire Department did not immediately release the identity of the victim. <\/p>\n

The department wrote that smoke from lithium-ion batteries becomes thick and toxic, and potentially lethal “within seconds” to such an extent that “even trained firefighters do not enter a smoke-filled environment without proper protective gear and self-contained breathing apparatus.”<\/p>\n

Lithium-ion batteries have become extremely common amid the proliferation of chargeable electronics, including smartphones, laptops, headphones, e-cigarettes, vacuums, e-bikes, and almost countless other devices.<\/p>\n

People are advised not to leave devices charging or while sleeping and to unplug them once they are fully charged.
