Yesterday we got news of the device reaching a major production milestone, then today details of the initial hiccups have already emerged.

Perhaps most notably, Sonny Dixon compared the first dummy models of the iPhone Fold to the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max.

Now, another important rumor has arrived—and it has to do with product branding.

per a new weibo post From leaker Digital Chat Station, the foldable iPhone is likely to be called ‘iPhone Ultra’ and not ‘iPhone Fold’.

Here is his translated post:

Apple’s wide-format foldable device is rumored to be called “iPhone Ultra.” Domestic manufacturers are reportedly considering this, temporarily branding their new foldables as “Ultra” – aiming to go head-to-head with Apple in terms of screen form factor, hardware specifications and pricing.

Naming is often one of the last details to leak about a new product. So it’s unclear how Chinese manufacturers got wind of Apple’s branding plans.

That said, it always pays to follow Apple’s lead within the industry. In some cases, companies even anticipate Apple’s actions based on rumors of what it is going to do. So I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple’s nomenclature has already been leaked.

9to5Mac’s take

I’ve personally argued in the past that iPhone Ultra makes sense as the name for Apple’s foldable. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman also recently hinted at the name ‘Ultra’.

However, lately, I’ve been leaning towards another name like iPhone Duo. The Ultra branding seems inappropriate for an iPhone that will lack Face ID and have one less camera than the Pro model.

But I will admit that Apple’s product names don’t always make the most sense. So if the company has decided on an ‘iPhone Ultra’ for its foldable, I’m sure it will have a strong argument that the new model deserves that name.

What do you think the name of iPhone Fold should be?
