This is more than 2.4% in February. <\/p>\n<p>The March data release represents the first CPI report since the Iran war began on February 28, and shows the financial fallout for consumers from the first month of fighting in the Middle East. <\/p>\n<p>While the U.S. and Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire late Tuesday, economists said it will take weeks or months for the war&#8217;s inflationary impact to subside \u2014 and a prolonged conflict risks pushing consumer prices higher in areas such as food, airfare and manufactured goods. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Inflation is a problem and it&#8217;s going to get worse,&#8221; said Mark Zandi, Moody&#8217;s chief economist. &#8220;Clearly, the war in Iran is causing significant damage.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>&#8220;We were cautiously optimistic about inflation picking up this year,&#8221; said Thomas Ryan, North America economist at Capital Economics, as price pressures such as tariffs were easing. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Basically, we&#8217;re holding out right now, just seeing what happens with energy price shocks,&#8221; Ryan said. &#8220;If this goes on longer, we become more concerned about leakage into other areas of the consumer wallet,&#8221; he said.  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The increase in inflation caused by the Iran war also complicates the Federal Reserve&#8217;s job of setting interest rate policy. <\/p>\n<p>At a March meeting, central bank officials said they expected to cut interest rates once this year, although some said it may be necessary to raise borrowing costs if inflation continues to rise due to the Iran war.  <\/p>\n<p>Fed officials also said they would need to remain &#8220;nimble&#8221; as they watched the war&#8217;s impact on inflation, which remains above the central bank&#8217;s 2% target. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Inflation is well above anyone&#8217;s comfort level \u2014 both consumers and the Federal Reserve \u2014 and it&#8217;s not going to get better, at least in the next few months,&#8221; Zandi said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\">Impact of Iran war on oil and gas prices<\/h2>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108289219\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>A ship waits to pass through the Strait of Hormuz following a two-week temporary ceasefire between the US and Iran in Oman on April 8, 2026, which is conditional on the opening of the strait.<\/p>\n<p>Shady Alasar Anadolu | getty images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The recent increase in energy prices is related to oil. <\/p>\n<p>Iran has effectively closed down ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway used for transportation <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/04\/07\/oil-prices-iran-war-trump-deadline-strait-hormuz.html\">About one-fifth of the world&#8217;s oil supply. According to reports, it appears that the blockade remains largely intact even after the ceasefire. <\/p>\n<p>Oil prices \u2013 as measured <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-12\">brent crude oil<span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span>A global price benchmark \u2013 rising from about $70 a barrel at the end of March to $118 a barrel before the conflict began. Prices have since fallen, but remain at around $96 as of Friday. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The good news now is that we have a two-week ceasefire and hopefully that will hold,&#8221; said Joe Seidl, senior markets economist at JPMorgan Private Bank. \u201cOtherwise we are looking at the largest oil supply shock in history since World War II.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"RegularArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 class=\"RelatedContent-header\">Read more CNBC personal finance coverage<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Products refined from oil \u2013 such as gasoline, diesel and jet fuel \u2013 have also grown rapidly. <\/p>\n<p>According to CPI data, retail gasoline prices rose 18.9% over the year. <\/p>\n<p>Consumers paid an average of $4.12 per gallon as of Monday, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/petroleum\/gasdiesel\/\">latest weekly data<\/a> \u2013 up from about $2.94 before the war started.<\/p>\n<p>The national average price jumped above $4 a gallon for the first time since 2022, when prices soared following Russia&#8217;s invasion of Ukraine, according to EIA data. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\">Airfare, food and e-commerce are under pressure <\/h2>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108234645\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>An employee unloads Amazon packages from a vehicle during Cyber \u200b\u200bMonday in New York, U.S., on Monday, Dec. 1, 2025. <\/p>\n<p>Bess Adler | Bloomberg | getty images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Meanwhile, high oil prices are also impacting other areas of household finances. <\/p>\n<p>For example, airlines are increasing ticket prices,<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/04\/07\/delta-checked-bag-fees.html\"> Increasing bag fees, adding fuel surcharges and cutting flight schedules to manage the consequences of the Iran war \u2013 all of which drive up the price tag for travelers. <\/p>\n<p>Companies are doing this to offset the high prices of jet fuel, one of the airlines&#8217; biggest operating costs. <\/p>\n<p>According to CPI data, airfares have increased by 14.9% in the last 12 months. <\/p>\n<p>The increases have been particularly pronounced for international flights: For example, the average round-trip economy fare from the US to Rome was $1,165 as of March 30, up from $846 as of Feb. 23, as of the latest. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kayak.com\/c\/airfare-trends\/\">weekly flight data<\/a> Compiled by Kayak, a travel search engine. A round-trip ticket to Hong Kong rose from $1,042 to $1,403 over the same period.<\/p>\n<p>If jet fuel prices remain near their current levels for a full year, airlines would have to raise ticket prices by about $50 for each one-way fare, or about 17%, Deutsche Bank analysts wrote in a report Tuesday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108282882\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108282882\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000407883\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Economists said food prices are another area that could come under pressure due to rising oil prices. <\/p>\n<p>For example, rising diesel prices affect transportation costs associated with delivering food to grocery stores, he said. Additionally, fertilizer is another major export through the Strait of Hormuz, threatening rising prices for farmers and consumers. <\/p>\n<p>According to CPI data, food prices increased by 2.7% compared to last year. Specific issues in some categories, such as beef and coffee, have caused prices to rise even higher, leading to reduced supply. <\/p>\n<p>Americans may also see an increase in the cost of shopping through e-commerce sites. Amazon will begin charging a 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge for third-party sellers in the US and Canada on April 17. Other shipping carriers like <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-22\">United Parcel Service<span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span>    And <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-23\">FedEx,<span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span>    Higher fuel surcharges have also been imposed since the beginning of the Iran war.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the inflationary effects of energy prices could take months to reach consumers&#8217; wallets through supply chains, said Ryan of Capital Economics. \u201cThe impact could be very widespread,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\">Why Iran War Inflation May Decrease Gradually?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108281383\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>Smoke is seen rising from the direction of an energy installation in the Gulf emirate of Fujairah on March 14, 2026. He said he expects it to reach about 4% and fall to 3% by the end of 2026. <\/p>\n<p>However, a prolonged war would likely keep inflation high and lead to widespread dislocations in goods and services, he said. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Economists say that even if more oil tankers start flowing through the Strait of Hormuz, it may take some time for the situation to return to normal. <\/p>\n<p>For example, the damage caused by attacks on energy infrastructure in the Middle East will take time to repair, he said. <\/p>\n<p>JPMorgan Private Bank&#8217;s Seidl used the expression &#8220;up like a rocket and down like a feather&#8221; to describe potential price dynamics, meaning that prices of gasoline and other areas of the household balance sheet often rise sharply during a shock, but then fall at a slower pace. <\/p>\n<p>Seidl said there is also likely to be a permanent &#8220;risk premium&#8221; on the oil price after the conflict is resolved. &#8220;Investors know this has happened and can happen again,&#8221; he said. <\/p>\n<p>Analysts said higher ancillary airline fees, such as for checked bags, could also become permanent, especially if demand remains strong. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ArticleBody-googlePreferredSourceContainer\" data-module=\"GooglePreferredSource\" data-id=\"RegularArticle-GooglePreferredSource-5\"><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/preferences\/source?q=https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/\">Choose CNBC as your favorite source on Google and never miss a moment of the most trusted name in business news.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A woman shops for dairy products at a local supermarket in the Sugar Hill neighborhood of the Manhattan borough of New York City on April 9, 2026.
