Then, in early December, a video showed us how it would all work on Android.

Now, new active UI elements have been revealed, and you can see them in the images below which also reveal the name of the feature: Tap to Share. It’s fairly self-explanatory and probably a lot easier to understand the name than NameDrop (which makes you think of sharing contacts, but it can also be used to share files and that’s where that name becomes much less useful).

Google’s Tap to Share for Android

The left image is a brief description of how it works, in the middle you can see the ‘glitter’ animation giving the instructions, and on the right is the new contact sharing screen, which has evolved from the initially leaked screen, no doubt due to continued development on Google’s part.

So, to make Tap to Share work to send contact information, photos, videos, links, locations, “and more,” you’ll need to unlock your phone and have the screens of both it and the phone it’s being shared to face up and overlap so you can see them both. Then you wait for the ‘shine’. If this doesn’t work, Google suggests holding the phones back to back. This dance is necessary because the placement of NFC chips on Android phones is not standardized.

It is still unclear when this tap to share functionality will be rolled out. When it comes to this, we believe it may be exclusive to Google’s Pixels for a certain amount of time before becoming available on more Android devices, as that’s how Google usually works. Maybe it will come as part of Android 17? only time will tell.

Source

In November, it emerged that Google was working on an Android version of Apple’s NameDrop feature, which lets you instantly share stuff between iPhones by bringing them close to each other.
